COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double Stout is the second in the series, brewed to a recipe from 4th August 1893 – a time when ’stout’ meant ’strong’. Its signature ingredient is Plumage Archer barley, carefully malted and kilned using 19th Century methods. Dark, brown and creamy this beer is brewed to 7.4% ABV and balances a rich fruity aroma with smoky, bittersweet chocolate notes.

Bottle from the LCBO. Very dark ruby-brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee, licorice and wood smoke. Medium bodied with light carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Flavour starts with coffee and bitter chocolate; develops some licorice and red wine in the middle; and finishes long with smoke, chicory, and more bitter chocolate. Gets better and better as it warms. Outstanding!

Lovely rich full. Best beer I’ve drunk for a while. Lovely balance of darkness, roasty pleasure with leather, hints of tobacco dark chocolate and all good things in dark beers. Sometimes with a gem once is enough but I could do a few of theses

Bottle. Cellar temp. Poured into a snifter. Beautiful dark brown colour. Thin tan head. Roasted malts in the aroma with pipe tobacco, grape, dark cherry and leather like a baseball mitt. Full bodied and oily. Nice flavour. Modest hop presence with a mild bitter quality. I taste coffee, chocolate wafers, almond, vanilla and smoke. Finish is long and dry.

Black color; medium sized beige head, creamy but not long persistent. Quite strong aroma of cardboard, cream, roasted malts, vanilla, leather, wood; interesting, different from most other Stouts. Strong body with smooth mouthfeel; the dominant flavor is chocolate, followed by more heavily roasted malts, and with a trace of liquorice; low bitterness, some of it from the roasted malts, and light late ashes; balanced. Very pleasant.

neongolden (61) - Ontario, CANADA - APR 26, 2012
(500mL bottle from LCBO) Poured cool, nearly pitch black with an inch of fine beige head that faded without lace. Aroma of roasted malts, cacao, coffee, woodsy smoky vanilla/leather, berries, bit of soya. Flavour initially roasted malts, slight creamy sweetness, then more bitter hops, cacao beans and dark coffee, finishes dry with smoky coffee roast and a medicinal anise tang. Body medium, somewhat creamy, carbonation soft, alcohol warmth moderate. Old-school stout, complex and interesting, dry and dangerously drinkable compared to RIS.
