First seen as a one-off cask release at Ealing beer festival in July 2012. Released in bottles in August 2012.
The third beer in the Past Masters series was first brewed on Thursday, September 10th 1931. The origins of the Old Burton style have changed over the course of the 20th Century, but this version is brewed to the authentic recipe - a true recreation of a wonderful long-lost beer. A rich, golden ale with a big malt character and an incredible balance of sweetness and warmth on the palate.

Shared 50cl from Auchan (Luxembourg). It pours brown colour with nice lacing. Aroma is caramel, toffee and yeast. Medium carbonation. Flavour starts quite sweet turning rapidly to a bitter with a dry end. Good!

Bottle. Pours a dark coppery brown with a decent, yellowish-brown head. Aroma is quite a bit of caramel, some house flavor of orange marmalade/pen sharpener shavings. Taste is quite dry with a lot of caramel, light house flavor, stiffly flowery, even a bit lemony bitterness. Fairly full, well carbonated.

Bottle picked up from the Union Tavern. The pourís rich reddish brown with an off-white head. The nose is leather, spiced fruit cake. Cherry pie. Rich, sweet, earthy malts. Light toasted brown bread. The taste is actually moderately hoppy. Notes of tobacco, earthy hops. Spiced pumpkin. Some wood. Chewy toffee and caramel. Slightly papery, oxidized. Medium body, fine carbonation. Overall, merely OK. Others in this series were more impressive.

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2013 Bottle 50 cl, BBE 08/2014. Pours mahogny in color with an off-white head. Toffee and old hay in aroma. Bit of semidark bread and dough as well. Not that sweet in taste even thereís some notes of butterscotch present. Nice light bitterness and just a bit of boozy punch in the end. This has even got that nice, slightly vinous and ripe dark fruity vibe in the end.

Not sure what to make of it. Not golden, but dark copper, clear as crystal. Aroma of those fruits in the cellar, the old barn. It starts to get to you as an old belgian type of beer, but the flavour is disappointing. Just bitter bread, flat, straight on your face, with no complexity, all behind a scandalous alcohol taste. The palate is very resinous, sticky even, but that doesnít save the beer. I did not like it.
