The first beer in the Past Masters series we have chosen to recreate is XX, a strong ale which is perfect for bottle conditioning. Brewed at 7.5% ABV, with the original recipe first used on September 2, 1891, it is dark, rich and full flavoured, with a distinctly warming character. XX is deeply satisfying, and an unforgettable experience for those who love traditional English beer. Fullerís Past Masters XX Strong Ale will be available in 500ml bottles from the Fullerís Brewery Shop and in selected Fullerís pubs. You can also buy Past Masters online.

Bottle. Pours out in a clear amber colour with a a small firm snow-white head. Red berries, marmalade, peppery alcohol and fudge. Medium-bodied with rich notes of prunes, over-riped oranges fudge and warming alcohol. Firm mouthfeel. Warming medium-bitter finish of peppery alcohol, grassy hops with sweetish undertones of oranges and red berries. Quite a nice sipper.

Much nicer than the 1914 X. Has been aged a bit, donít know under what conditions. The usual fullers marmaldey flavours, and a strong cinnamon "hot rots" taste.

Pours a clear somewhat coppery color, topped with a medium white head. Malty aroma, some spices in there and some alcohol notes. Malty taste, thereís some caramel present, some roasty feel and some alcohol to give it that strong feel (not completely nice though). Not bad really, but not that good either.

Bottle @ home. Cellared for 4 years. Orange infused dark amber color with an off white head and nice lacing. Sweet & warm aroma. Vinous raisins & dates, maltiness, caramel, toffee & biscuits. Hints of oranges, marzipan, spices and wood. Big mouth feel, medium carbonation and with warming alcohol notes. Flavor is moderate vinous with raisins. Caramel, toffee, bread, biscuits, orange marmalade and some spiciness. For a short while oxidation (due to my aging) gets through along with hints of metal and band-aid at low levels, that the other flavors canít hide, to an almost unpleasant level in the mid taste. But then, aftertaste hits in and has a well defined and balanced woody bitterness that makes this beer finish nicely.

Bottle at home. Dark ruby amber colour with a medium sized off white head. Aroma is pleasant, sweet malts, floral hops, slight spice. Flavour is a little peppery, sweet malts, burnt toffee, fruit, burnt toffee. A bit of strength is evident but always say there is nowt wrong with that.

Bottle from the LCBO. Best before date of Dec 2013, so I guess itís officially a couple of weeks past itís prime, but it shouldnít kill me, right? Relatively clear amber-orange body with a medium sized just-off-white head. Aroma is a bit oxidized, but still pleasant, with notes of dried orange peel, caramel, marzipan and buckwheat honey. Flavour starts sweet, bringing to mind dried figs macerated in tawny port, and then turns surprisingly bitter, with a big hit of citrus rind and a long, dry herbal/medicinal finish. I was half expecting a stale and flabby beer as punishment for keeping it in my cellar for too long, but this was really excellent.

Bottle shared by Cuso, thank you! Lightly hazy deep amber colour. Aroma shows strong alcohol, some maltiness. Taste is quite plain, malty, caramel, raisins. Full body, nicely drinkable. Good beer.
