4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rich brown and amber color with a thin white head. Aromas of caramel and nuts with dried fruits., mostly plums and sweet grapes. The taste is super carame, raisens, malt and prunes. Super sweet but somehow lively enough to clense the palate. The finish though, I get some creaminess like cashew butter.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
50cL bottle, courtesy of ClarkVV @ BCTC 2007. Thanks, Clark! Pours a clear, dark ruby-red color; off-white head with fine-bubbled lacing. Oxidized caramel and chewy dried fruits in the aroma. Medium-to-full, chewy mouthfeel: dense, oxidized caramel and dried dark fruits; chewy viscous malt character. Lengthy, dried fruit and brown sugar finish; plenty of caramel.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2004 Bottle #59880 - Sampled 24 Jan 2004.
Beautiful tan creamy head on a cloudy orange/amber body. Fruity aroma with notes of malt, wood and olives. Flavor is very tense and heavy, almost like desert wine. Notes of malt, fruit, wood, olives etc. Fine bitter finish. Very soft and creamy. Interesting but a little too heavy for me!!

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Sampled in 2004: Huge nose of sweet dark fruits, and a little clay and earthy aromas. Hazy red-brown color and a big spongy head. Barleywine-like flavors and dark fruits (figs). Alcohol a go-go - comes across like a brandy at times. Powerful hop punch that lingers in the lower insdie of the mouth. A sugary sweetness is also deposited on the lips. Fat and chewy body. Great balance.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle No. 25144: Nice creamcolored medium head, leaving brussels laces on the glass. Light red color, hazy. Raisons nose also malt figs and dates - kind of ppery too. Malt and raisons taste, not as intens as in the 1998 vintage. Doesn't scatch but isn't smooth either. Kind of weak taste, not the same Strong Ale/Barley Wine character as in the 1998, 1999 an 2000 vintage, which suprised me a bit as this bottle is with 7 years well aged.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle #84091. Rich copper iin colour, lasting medium sized tan head, some lace. The aroma is of caramel, earth, some light chocolate, plums and other dark fruits. The flavour is showing signs of oxidation, still has some caramel/toffee sweetness, raisins, berries and bread. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, mild carbonation. Finishes slightly sweet, lingering. Very cool to have all the Vintage Ales as part of a vertical.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Deep red color. Thick and soapy head. Big bold nose. Smooth to almost a fault. Definitely did not need 7+ years. Hops are more noticable then usual.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Thanks to Chris_o for sharing this bottle with Denverlogan and me. Bottle #25,004. Sparkling, copper colour with a thin tan head. The nose has sweet malt and caramel and a touch of berry jam. A rich, sweet, barley wine style ale to taste with sticky malt, fruit and a touch of spice. It had generally held up well but perhaps was starting to show itís age with some slight oxidation and hints of wet cardboard. Thoroughly enjoyable.
