wetherel (912), Carlsbad, California, USA May 17, 2008 Bottle from CaptainCougar. Thanks! 9yr old bottle. Opened at Sean and Ryan’s party, and compared against 2000 and 2004. Everybody, including myself, prefers the 1999. I think they are similar though. I think the 1999 by chance has held up a bit better than the 2000. Amber color. Mellow. Mildly sweet and malty. Almost oaky. No oxidation or off flavors. Pretty good.
OStreetBrewery (92), Wellington, New Zealand Jul 26, 2008 Pours a murky amber with a healthy white head. Aroma features a heady complex mix of stone fruit, particularly apricot, orange fruit, nutty chewy malt, barley sugar and a hint of fortified wine.
On the palate there is a velvety smooth mouthfeel, nutty rich malt, reminiscent of Tom Hardy’s, dry barley sugar, orange fruit, a hint of warm Xmas cake spice all leading to an incredibly rounded smooth finish. Knock out beer! jjpm74 (2760), Connecticut, USA Jul 7, 2008 Pours copper with a thin white head. Smells earthy with touches of fruit, caramel, earthy hints. Tastes of caramel and overly cloying with a semi tarte finish. EHSRanders (661), Randers C, Denmark Jun 5, 2008 Rating no. 600 Bottle. Hazy amber colour with large creamy off-white mostly lasting head. Powerfull malty aroma. Sweet fruity flavor. Warm alcoholic finish. Oily palate. Stine (1279), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA May 24, 2008 Updated: May 25, 2008Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Murky, syrupy amber appearance, still as a spirit. Golden raisin, toffee, sherry aroma; caramel, brown sugar, and especially butterscotch seem most recurrent with some exposure, but this butterscotch note is pure and rich and somehow easy to separate from the sticky haze of movie theater popcorn and fake caramel apple diacetyl. Really sweet and decadent, with an impressive regal posture. Calm, polished malt flavor, glassy and rich; some dirty wood must, creamy vanilla, pear, and glazed donut doughy sweetness. Consistently cool and seeming a bit leafy at times, though this green quality more often intimates a raw pistachio nuttiness than much bitterness. Bitterness itself is present reticently in the form of a light but permeating citric acid, and a whisk of pure dark chocolate. Richly realized complexities here. Soft oxidation evident; dry medium to heavy palate with very gentle carbonation and a spirit-like alcoholic texture. Oily, tannic cherry tinted finish. Lightly oxidized, certainly, though it seems designed to withstand and even to include that result of extended age. Thanks Eric! hapjydeuce (526), Carlsbad, California, USA May 18, 2008 Bottle shared at Sean and Ryan’s tasting, thanks to wetherel for bringing this one. Opaque amber color with a still appearance. Sweet, malty aroma with notes of caramel and ginger. Flavor follows up with cinnamon cherry and nutmeg with a sherry / red wine finish. Very smooth palate and the flavors have blended really well with this much age on it.
