85,000 bottles of Vintage Ale were produced with an organic theme, using Champion Optic Malt and Organic Target Hops. A fresh hop aroma with notes of honey and toffee, leads to a slightly sweeter taste and burnt, bitter aftertaste.

Bottle no 04732. A reddish brown coloured beer with a short-lived head. The aroma is alcohol, toffee, raisins and plums. No aged character at all to the smell even after 5 years plus. The taste is as smooth as it gets. Lovely malts, butterscotch - but not in a bad diacetyl way - moussey fruits, and light hops. Again no indication of the age, just beautifully preserved and very, very tasty and moreish. As much as I love sharing, I was very happy to drink this all to myself.

This was an unbelievable treat courtesy of Geoff Griggs, whom I owe a debt of thanks. Tasted at 14 years old and this beer has kept incredibly well in that time. It had perfect clarity and colour, a beautiful light mahogany with essentially nil head. The initial impression of the aroma was a slightly fungal one, maybe botrytis without being the least off-putting. There was muscatele grapes, some walnut woodiness, marzipan, mildew and Amontillado sherry. A fortified wine like flavour that encompassed all the aromas and a wet grain characteristic. Utterly remarkable as much for the remarkable company as a beer I shall always remember.

550 ml bottle @ the Grand Vintage Tasting, Tampere. Thanks rosenbergh. Pours a copper amber colour with a small head. Aroma is rather sweet and malty with some orange marmalade, biscuit and some cellar. Flavour of biscuit, some red berries, toffee, orange marmalade, some earthiness, even some hops and cellar. Sweet finish. Medium bodied and surprisingly high carbonation for a beer that’s 14 years old. Vintage 1999 was so much better.

55 cl bottle. @ The Grand Vintage tasting.
Bottle No. 70091.
Pours slightly hazy mahogany color with a small head. A lot more sweet ripe fruits here, some cellar notes too. Some hop notes on the taste, would you believe it or not, plums, bread, dry malts and caramel. Slick palate, oily even. Not as smooth as 1999, good anyway.

550 ml bottle. Bottle #70091. (Fuller’s) London, the UK. The Grand Vintage Tasting.
A dark amber colour with a small frothy tan head. A musty wine cellar aroma with sweet dark fruits and some toffee sweetness in the aroma. The flavour is dark fruits, sugary sweetness, mild hoppy notes (not that fresh any more), mild bitterness and dry maltiness. Quite nice. Quite a lot different beer than the 1999 vintage.

glennmastrange (2324) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - AUG 30, 2014
Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of roasted, caramel and nutty, moderate cooked orange for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with dried cherry, date and toffee. Head is average size, fizzy, off-white with slippery, bubbly lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is hazy reddish brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes moderately sweet, acidic and bitter. Palate is medium to full, syrupy with a lively to fizzy carbonation and a lightly alcoholic finish. A potent and deep English Strong Ale.

Flaske nr. 54347. Spandert av og delt med Rune etter arbeidsøkt i WCveien 13 Mar 13. BBdato 2004 - men bar ikke preg av forfall. Snarere tvert imot. Rødbrun. Litt uklar. Høyt luftig skum. Markert aroma av tre & sevje. Smaken det samme med innslag av mandler. Svakt søtlig fruktig ettersmak. Lett-drikkelig.

Part of a vertical comparison, many thanks to M & L V.!. Huge, creamy, pinkish rusty head over copper-brown beer. oxydation, walnut, portwine, madeira, Christmas cake. Sweet with full madeirisation, sweet and (wal)nutty. Very slick, but unavoidable thinner MF than younger version, age-thinning. Vanilla, sweet bread, leaving a sweet lingering aftertaste.

Bottled, 500ml, no. 28,655 from Sainsbury’s in Banbury. Reddish copper with white head. Full, fruity beer, there is a sweetish toffee background then a mixture of dried fruity notes to the fore, prunes, sultana’s in addition a hazelnut note lingers on the palate. Late bitterness with roasty malts showing through. Luscious.
