3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle number 117306. Pours with an almost completely clear deep orange to lightly copper hue with a massive bone colored off-white head. I do not remember the head being as gigantic in years past. Outstanding lace and retention. Aromas are quite hop forward, and more so than a few of the others in the past. Lots of marmalade, orange and citrus peel, grassy, herbal and even a bit minty. Some currants, berry and baked apple yeast esters. Malt profile seems complex, bready, toffee, biscuity, fig, vanilla. Light alcohol, and even a bit of a musty quality. Overall, quite a fruity expression of hops and yeast, with the rich malt taking a back seat. Flavors donít quite live up to the 2009 or 2010 when fresh. Bready up front, malty, biscuity, crackery. Medium to slightly sharp, unrefined bitterness, orange peel, orange and angostura bitters. Marmalade. Dried apricot. Malt profile seems a bit thinner than in the past. Toffee and burnt caramel as it warms. Mildly floral. Medium fruit esters, peaking alcohol. Lightly astringent alcohol presence as well. Creamy, slightly fuller carbonation. Medium bodied, fruity during the long duration that finishes a bit bitter. Warming.
Not my favorite of the recent vintages fresh, although I can see this mellowing into something quite nice in a 9 months to a year. Hop character on this one isnít my favorite expression.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy/fizzy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, husks), moderately hoppy (apricot, flowers), with light notes of dried mango, soured fruit, and bile. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, husky. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Slightly better flavor balance than in previous years (although the 2010 never came to Colorado, or I never saw it...in fact, 2009 bottles were gathering dust on some shelves right up until this recently arrived), but it achieves that with a bit more acidity than usual. Mostly pleasant aroma offers tropical fruits and cookie-caramel malt character. Some grainy-husky malt and some kind of sour fruit - bile thing mars the nose slightly (theyíre relatively mild), and the medium/watery body just canít bear its 8.5% booze level...this would be better at 6% or so. A grainy finish hurts the otherwise decent flavor balance. Overall just ok.

500ml bottle. Clear deep amber pour with an average off-white head that sticks around and leaves a nice lace. Aromas of spicy hops, cooked fruit and caramel. Very caramel on the palate with some sweet fruit across the middle and a lightly warming finish.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Beer Revolution. Pours clear copper with a foamy 3 finger light beige head that does some moderate ring lacing. (Beer Hunter tulip) Deep aromas of roast malt and medium dark fruit. Med+ body. Flavor is plummy? Certainly dark roast malt. Itís not very thick, but the flavors are complex. Itís wonderful. Thereís treacle. Some date. Still thinking plum. Ok, prune. Itís very well balanced. Finish is towards dry, but the malt is persistent. Spicy. Definitely. Took a while to get that. And with time it seems to be thicker than before. Another brilliant ale from Fullers.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a deep golden brown with a thin white cap. Aroma is biscuity, malty, some odd notes of sour dough that are a bit hard for my nose to get over, but itís still good, mild after thoughts of vanilla, and oak. The flavour follows suit on the biscuity bits, all kinds of malt flavours, toffee, maybe a hint of dark rum? booze is there skulking around in the background, becomes most prevalent in the finish. Foamy mouth feel. I liked this beer, enjoyed the whole ride, but canít help feeling that it could have been better, especially if Iíd aged it about a year or so.
