COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Forager Series.
Persimmon (Diospyros Virginiana) — literally, “fruit of the gods.” Sweet and savory, with natural notes of cinnamon and apricot, the orange-globed persimmon fruit truly is heavenly. But it’s not until after the first frost that persimmon turns from astringent and bitter to a luscious fruit worthy of the gods.
Once again, the annual wild persimmon harvest was amazing. The Forager community gathered over 550 pounds of native North Carolina persimmons, a harvest that began in September 2013 — well before the first frost. This bountiful yield produced a complex, fruit- forward winter ale. The beer’s notes of holiday spices come entirely from the native persimmon and the beer’s Belgian ale yeast.
In the fall of 2014, we’ll debut a brandy barrel-aged version.
Availability: FALL and WINTER 2014. 10% ABV

750 ml bottle from JCB- thanks, Jason! Bottle 070 of 800. Pours a cloudy plum brown color with some amber highlights and a thick, foamy off-white head that dissipates into a thin film quickly. The aroma started too light for me, but opened up after a few minute with notes of earthy funk, cinnamon, fruitcake, caramel malts, and plums- I like Jason’s "wild winter warmer" description. The flavor brings more of the funk, fruit, and spices evident in the nose. Maybe it’s persimmon I’m getting from this, but I wouldn’t know one if I saw one. Light-medium bodied, with abundant but soft carbonation and a juicy, funky mouthfeel. The hops seem to have fallen out and this really does take a little warming before it gets interesting. I’d drink this as fresh as you can and doubt it will get better. Cool beer.

Sampled from a 750 ml bottle, number 379/800, and shared during BDR’s annual BBQ weekend. Pours a semi-clear reddish copper colored brew with a thick beige head that slowly dissipates to a creamy top and spotty lacing. Aroma of multi-grain and caramel malt, some plum, tropical fruit and a hint of apricots. Taste is medium bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of light fruit, multi-grain and caramel malts, some mild spice and a touch of candied cherries. Finish has a neutral aftertaste with some caramel malt, light tropical fruit and low bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden.

22oz bottle I picked up at a artisans market at Union Market in DC. Pours a clear amber with some thin, eggshell head. Nose is interesting, some muddled dark fruit, plum, malt, some orange peel but then a lot of tomato and a little celery seed. Flavor is the same, some mild sweetness, some tart tomato, herbal, oddly savory too. Slightly sticky finish. Very strange.

Thanks to bmanning for opening a bottle of this. Served in a snifter. Pours a moderately-hazy orange color with a single-finger white head and a bit of lacing. The nose brings forward a bit of light spicing and a bit of fruitiness. The taste adds a bit more fruit and a bit of earth. The persimmons are there, but not over the top. Body is light with good carbonation. Drinks fairly well and was a nice take on the style. Certainly couldn’t tell that the ABV was this high. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-14-2011

This draft brew from the brewery poured a head of foamy with a frothy top finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a transparent red brown colored body. The mild aroma was mild fruit. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a medium fruity aftertaste. The funky flavor contained notes of mild spice mild hops and fruity.
