Black pour with small head which was oily and long lasting. Aroma of roasted malts, hints of chocolate and coffee. Flavor had hints of vanilla, the bourbon notes, as well as chocolate and coffee. Excellent beer and my favorite from this brewery by far.

Dark black in color, thick black head. Nice dark stout but chocolate and coffee flavors. Aroma was also thick and very good. This was a very good Impy Stout.

On tap at the brewery, Durham. Having tried a variant of this stout over the summer, it was nice to get a crack at the base beer. Turned out to be a very enjoyable example of the style. Nice dusty looking black pour, with a moderately oily looking body and a thin but lasting head. Pleasant aroma with an abundance of roasted malts and a nice understated barrel presence to complement that. Nice full mouthfeel, just enough carbonation, and nice semi-dry finish. Somehow the presence of the deep chocolate flavors and the bourbon give this one just a hint of a dark fruit quality, even without the additions. Nice stuff.

Draft at the brewery (from notes.) Deep black color, a soft, small, creamy head. Nice rich chocolate and black licorice flavors with a hint of bourbon. Spicy hops round out the flavor without coming on too strong. It’s not as complex as many barrel-aged imperial stouts, but goes down smoother than most. A very well made beer, and possibly my second favorite Fullsteam beer behind only the great Wanderlust.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2011 Great stout. Appearance is like a black hole from which no light can escape, projecting only a stream of a light brown head and aromas of chocolate and a slight roastiness. You can barely taste the gravity of this black hole although it is obviously there. Taste of chocolate, vanilla, sweetness, and finishes like a dry whiskey to balance the sweetness.

Draught @ Sam’s Blue Light and The Pit. Opaque black pour. Head is dark tan and one finger thick. Lots of bourbon in the nose, some coffee and chocolate with hints of vanilla and cherry skin. Rich and roasty flavor with lots of vanillin and bourbon. Hints of alcohol and cherry. Medium body and a warming finish.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of bourbon, roasted malt. Flavor features booze, bourbon, oak barrel, vanilla, and sweet roasted malt. For me, a pretty good barrel aged beer and fairly drinkable too.

Half pint at Sam’s. Black with a small tan head. Nose is heavy sweet bourbon, vanilla, light roasted malt. Flavor is heavy bourbon, some roasted malt, light cocoa. Sweet, fairly thick mouthfeel without being too cloying. Nothing like a barrel aged imperial stout on a thursday morning at 1130. Nice work, Sean and Co!

On tap from the brewery. Pours dark brown, nearly black with a thin beige head. Nose is chocolate, sweet malts, wood, vanilla (bourbon), and a surprisingly sweet maple syrup vibe. Taste shows more (a bit too much) of the maple syrup flavor. Tasty, but so sweet it’s hard to drink more than a half pint.
