COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sweet Potato Lager
North Carolina is the largest U.S. producer of sweet potatoes. In our quest to work with local Southern ingredients as much as possible, the humble sweet potato is an obvious choice. In fact, one-third of the total fermentables in Carver come from North Carolina sweet potatoes.

Perhaps less obvious: our decision to avoid cloying spices that would only serve to mask the savory-yet-delicate flavors. The goal of this modestly-hopped amber ale is to have you explore the nuance of the sweet potato…not hit you over the head with Obvious Spices. What is, after all, the taste of a sweet potato? Carver asks this quest ion and encourages you to explore the answer.

Why “Carver?” It’s our small tribute to the amazing Southern environmental scientist and farmer, Doctor George Washington Carver. While he may be better known for his work with peanuts, Carver was also passionate about the sweet potato and a pioneer in crop rotation and creative re-use. He’s a true Fullsteam hero. 5.8% ABV

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark orange with a thin white head. Aroma of sweet bready malt, sweet fruits. Flavor is very sweet and malty. A good lager but just marginal to ok overall. 6/4/6/3/11 (3.0/5)

A golden amber lager with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet solventy malt with fruity esters. In mouth, a sweet weizen like offering with banana esters, cloves, not bad. On tap at Twin City Brewfest, August 13 2011.

Draft from fullsteam. Good beer. A really clean crisp dry beer. I like the earthiness to it.

Sweet potatoes really comes across well in both aroma and flavor in Carver. Some lager twang is here but it melds well with the pitatoe lending a full but light mouthfeel, and ending in a spicy balanced fade.

On tap at the tavern. Pours cloudy light orange with a fairly minimal bubbly white head. Nose of sweet potatoes, sour dough bread, mild yeast, and light malts. More sweet potato, more bread, and less malt than the regular carver. Similar taste; perhaps a bit more dry. Palate is a bit more lively than the original. Refreshing.

Growler from the brewery. Pours light clear orange with modest white head. Nose shows mild sweetness and crisp hops with mild floral and grass notes. Some orange citrus. A little bit of earth and soil. I can maybe barely detect any sweet potatoes on the nose, and the sweetness comes through a little more on the taste, but mostly this is about light, crisp hops. Great for the summer.

Pint at brewpub. Good aroma, sour, sourdough bread, hints of the sweet potato. Clean brownish orange color, ok head and lace. Lively carbonation. Bitter flavor. Lite body, thin watery mouthfeel, clean dry sweet crisp finish (if thats possible) tasty a classic lager first, sweet potato doesn’t show up in flavor. Nice lawn mower brew,

From growler. Clear gold brown, full white head diminishes quickly & no lacing (glass not beer-clean). Strong aroma of earthy hops, soil, light malt, slight orange citrus. Flavor is soft light malt that melds into a crisp, lightly sour hop bite, earthy and vegetative. Much fuller flavor than most lagers. Fairly clean finish, leaves slight bitter linger. Light body, moderate carbonation, and crisp flavor make it thirst quenching and sessionable.
