COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The concept: a low-alcohol creamy dark ale with flavors of R.C. Cola and MoonPies — the foundation of the South’s 15-cent working man’s lunch. No, there’s no actual MoonPie in this beer — instead, we brew with chocolate husks from Raleigh’s great artisan chocolate-maker, Escazu. Enjoy a lunch break for a new era. Go ahead, boss man: have your three martinis… we’ll have a Working Man’s Lunch.

Draft pint at the brewery. Pours a mostly clear brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of earth, bananas, chocolate, yeast, sweet malts, clove, and leafy, earthy notes. Flavor of caramel and chocolate malts, earth, soda, bananas, and sweet bread. Light-bodied, with high carbonation and a sweet, earthy mouthfeel. This one is all over the place, and not nearly as chocolate-forward as it should have been based on the description.

Served on draft at the brewery. Pours a clear dark brown color with a large creamy light brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate, caramel and a fruity finish. The taste is chocolate, tart cherries, stone fruits and a slightly vegetal note. Medium bodied and very drinkable.

Draught @ Alivia’s. Sits garnet brown in the glass with ruby edges and one finger of sandstone tan head. Nose shows a light roasty character with notes of toasted grain and chocolate. Some fruity esters coming through and a hint of diacetyl. Flavor is well represented by the aroma in that you taste everything you smell and vice versa. Toasty with notes of semis-sweet bakers chocolate and herbal hops. Is the alcohol correctly listed here? Didn’t seem like 6% and it does say low alcohol

draft. Pours brown with medium thin tan head. Chocolate and dark fruit aroma. Flavor is quite sweet, tastes like soda with chocolate thrown in. Medium light body and thin texture, soft carbonation, and abrupt finish. Goes down like flat soda. Interesting overall, not bad.

Draft at brewery. It smells like a chocolate moon pie with this kind of grain y husky thing. Pours very dark with a thin brown head. Very dry chocolate notes on the tongue. Not getting much rc cola. Finishes clean.

Great beer. The flavors in this ale weakens the heart of any true southerner, it’s take me back home MoonPie taste is excellent!

Thanks to bmanning for opening this growler to start off a recent tasting. Served in a snifter. Pours near black with a short tan head that leaves behind a tad bit of lacing and has a nice tan collar throughout the brew. The nose is pretty nice with a bit of roast and chocolate plus some mild German yeast characteristics. A bit of banana in there, though not really any clove. They certainly hit their description, though I’m not sure how well it works. The flavor is fairly roasty, though it is pretty light as well. Faint dark chocolate notes throughout as well as a lingering yeast presence. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. Overall, this is pretty good. Certainly unique. Old note, @ Tylers Apex. Good aroma, sweet, roasty, cola, chocolate. Dark orangy brown color, pinhead and lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Tasty, easy to drink, definitely got the cola and moon pie notes, fun brew.

TURDFERGUSON (2759) - Carrboro, North Carolina, USA - JAN 17, 2011
Draught at Sandwhich. Pours like RC Cola with just a tad more body. Kind of a light bodied brown ale, easy drinking. Chocolate husks are present but not overwhelming. Lacking any sort of direction or complexity. An easy sipper which I guess fits the name if you have some work you gotta get done in the afternoon.

Dark brown pour with tan head and some lacing. Aroma of chocolate and some malt, flavor is very watery and thin. Definitely don’t get the moon pie flavors at all.

On tap at the brewpub. Interesting that this ale, too, has been redescribed and recategorized. It’s good that FS no longer identifies this as a stout, as absolutely everyone seemed to find it more of a brown ale (given its fairly thin body, etc.). Clear medium-brown pour with little carbonation. Very modest chocolate notes in the nose, with some hints of the malt profile of the base brown. Was really hoping for more creamy consistency in the body, but alas it was disappointing in this regard. Some cola notes along with the choc, but the flavor too was fairly anonymous.
