Fulton War and Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout conditioned with whole bean Peace Coffee in the fermentation tank. It’s an epic work of beer, but unlike the novel, this beer is brief and fleeting, appearing just once a year in February. Historic quantities of chocolate malt and roast barley clash over a field of dark roast Peace Coffee beans. Like Tolstoy’s masterpiece, it may take some time to finish and require some thought along the way. But by the end, we think you’ll find yourself better for the effort.

Appearance: Gloopy! Heavy! Glugs out a jet black body with a thin, beige head that was a little hard to scare up being a few centimeters. Smell: W+P is loaded with richly roasty, coffee aromas, backed by dark chocolate, molasses and a bit of sweet caramel with lighter touches of dark fruit, alcohol and ground spice. Taste: Deeply roasty with bright coffee flavors, bitterish dark chocolate and sulphured molasses. Some dark fruitiness present, a little spicy anise. Underlying bitterness beneath the dense maltiness. Touch of alcohol. Drying, bitterish, chocolaty finish. Mouthfeel: Full-bodied. Medium-light carbonation. Damnably chewy mouthfeel. Overall: From the get-go, this one looked like it was right up my alley and it was.

Appearance: viscous, oily, inky black with a short, creamy, tight-bubbled dark brown head that was almost purple. Aroma: beautiful aroma, full of finely ground espresso (reminded me of Café Bustelo), bitter dark chocolate, a hint of molasses, with some dark fruit, black bread, and licorice. Taste: café mocha, with earthy undertones; there’s a lot of cold-pressed coffee here, with good dark chocolate and maybe some dark fruit. Finish: lingering roasty character and coffee flavors, but thankfully without the acidity that can be so common in the style; alcohol seemed well hidden, but I was left with a bit of a fuzzy tongue. Notes: Enjoyable. Palate seemed fulsome and rich (with some almost granular notes) to me, and it was coffee forward without that bright acidity I hate in coffee infused stouts. Weird mouthfeel after it was all said and done was the only down note for me. Bottle from the Rare Beer Club.
