COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A libertine is someone living free of society’s restraints. Similarly, The Libertine doesn’t constrain itself with preconceived notions of what a beer style should be. Loaded with malts that include the UK’s premium Maris Otter and Caramel 60, and topped off with Rye to impart a distinct reddish hue, the Libertine is a malt-dominated red ale like none you’ve ever had before. It boasts a rich, indulgent body without being overly sweet. Conventional classifications fail The Libertine, but who really wants to play by the rules anyway?

Capped 750 from Guerde. What trading is all about! Thanks Andy! Pours almost cherry red with a slight beige head. Aroma is heavy malt - sort of like a rye wee heavy? Full bodied. Boy it is malty. There’s some roast malt, something a little nutty perhaps, and there are rye spice notes. It doesn’t finish exactly dry, but it is pretty close considering how malty it starts.

750 bottle-thanks Jim-retaining tight tan head with trailing lace-dk copper. A-pine/orange, sweet med malt-caramel, yeast. T-orange/pine/spice hops, sweet med malt-caramel/roast, med fruit, yeast. Maybe some homebrew character, but not strong enough to detract.

Tap @ Northbound. Pours a clear, dark orange with a cream colored head. Toasty caramel, a bit sugary, toffee, herbal hoppy nose. Strong, somewhat boozy, caramel, grassy, herbal, sugary flavor. Pretty strong and sugary.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear red with a touch of amber and a near white head that dissipates it the edges. Aroma has lots of sweet grains with hints of caramel and light fruits underlying. Flavor is similar with sweet grains and bread up front with a touch of light fruit in the finish.

Tap at Northbound. Rich reddish pour with a large off white head. Syrupy palate. Rich caramel aroma. Alcohol is noticeable. Big and good, nice brew.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark red pour with slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, dark red fruits, some slight toffee, earth, hints of a spicy hop, touch of grain, pretty much your standard red. Taste is similar with some caramel, toffee, nice red fruits, finishing fairly sweet, slightly spicy, and slightly bitter. Not very memorable.

ABR 2010. I liked this. Tons of malt aroma and grainy, malt flavor on the palate with bread. Just a light hint of roast. The rye gives a very light sourness. Red/brown color.

Sampled on tap at Fulton. Pours an amber color with white head. Caramel, syrupy, malty flavors. Kinda flat and cardboardy.

Draft at Fulton Taphouse near Target Field in Minneapolis. Sweetness in the nose. Softly carbonated. Higher alcohol prevalent. Caramel notes with a hint of molasses. A little harshness/pepper in the finish. Nice beer, probably their best to date.

Bottle. Dark amber pour, very light carbonation and an aroma of spicy rye and caramel. Flavor is also some spicy caramel, hints of medicinal raisins and dry & a little warming on the finish. At $10 bottle, I’ll probably only pick this one up once; but good nonetheless.
