COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fulton War and Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout conditioned with whole bean Peace Coffee in the fermentation tank. It’s an epic work of beer, but unlike the novel, this beer is brief and fleeting, appearing just once a year in February. Historic quantities of chocolate malt and roast barley clash over a field of dark roast Peace Coffee beans. Like Tolstoy’s masterpiece, it may take some time to finish and require some thought along the way. But by the end, we think you’ll find yourself better for the effort.

March 6, 2015 - on tap at Busters. Dark brown pour with limited head that didn’t last. Aroma was chocolate, roasted malt and coffee. Taste was consistent with aroma. Finish was dry and heavy on the alcohol, and lingered for a while in the aftertaste.

On tap at the brewery. Pours near black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of rich coffee backed by roasted malts and dark grains. Flavor is similarly dominated by coffee with some dark grains and roasted malts underlying.

Bottle shared by a friend. Darkest brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of malt, coffee, chocolate and slight green pepper. Chocolate and malt flavor with coffee and vanilla before a silky smooth finish.

This wasn’t for me. I appreciate what went into this hence the higher score but this is all about the coffee. This smells and tastes like someone put coffee beans and alcohol into a blender and hit the on button. Very earthy and all coffee. Almost salty on the finish. No thanks.

750ml bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma strong of roasted malts, a lot of coffee, dark chocolate, caramel malts, light bitterness, and some dough. Flavor the same with a great blend of the coffee and imperial stout. Smooth, thicker texture. A very solid imperial coffee stout.

This was stashed in my fridge, while I read Tolstoy’s classic. I saved it as a reward for finishing the book, but as usual with Fulton beers purchased from retail outlets, it was a disappointment. Nothing special about this product at all, but like Natasha Rostov tending to Prince Andrey after the Battle of Borodino, I stayed with it to the bitter end (no pun intended). OK, I’ll give the color and head decent reviews. My opinion of Fulton product remains unchanged: not worth a penny out of the bottle, but worth every penny when purchased from it’s tap room outside Target Field.
