This Imperial Stout is about drawing a line in the sand. It has a consistency similar to 5W-30. Adventurous tattoo artists have used it in place of ink. If left outside during winter, it won’t freeze, even in Minnesota. Beneath the dark exterior, a swirling ambush of coffee and chocolate flavors await, held up by a decadent malt backbone. Like its namesake, The Worthy Adversary’s movements are mysterious. Be wary–it could strike anywhere, any time.

12oz bottle. Dark brown with a slight reddish tinge, some brown head that disappears. Nicely roasted malt, chocolate shavings, some hazelnut and caramel, mild+ carbonation, moderate body, sweet, somewhat boozy, interesting.

Bottle - Pours ruby black with a thin tan head. Nose is smoky and grainy with peanut butter notes. Taste is lots of charcoal malt, a little smoke, and lots of grain. Again, a little peanut butter. Thin body, fluffy with soft carbonation.

Tap at the brewery. Snifter glass. Nice dark black color with a slightly tan quarter finger head. Aroma is relatively faint but brings roasted malt and slight coffee notes to the party. Hard to explain but a brightness to the beer at first sip that gives way to the stout strength as the sip continues. Definite coffee and roasted qualities but not an overwhelming presence. Nice balance and an easy drinkability despite the high alcohol content. Dangerous. A little bit of a nearly Belgian quad like essence which is probably why I’m on board. It is indeed worthy of a high rating. Might be the pinnacle of Fulton’s stable.

On tap at the brewery. Pours near black with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of dark grains and roasted malts with a hint of coffee and a touch of dark fruits. Flavor combines bitter dark grains, roasted malts and a touch of coffee underlying.

Poured from a 750ml bottle - aged a while because it has been sitting in my fridge for a long time. Aroma - Dark chocolote - roasty coffee flavors - nice! Appearance - Jet Black pour with a nice creamy head. Taste - thick creamy - hints of booziness...and very nice. Very nice beer - would definitely have again.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a brown head. Roasted malt aromas. Nice dark roasted malt notes with licorice and bitter chocolate undercurrents. Good body and mouthfeel. A solid imperial stout.

Refrigerated 12 oz. bottle poured into a glass. Black with small beige head. Aroma is dark malt, medium body, medium carbonation, and good small-bubble lacing. Taste is dark malt, roasty, some herbal hops, and bitter dry finish.

[Bottle] Pours dark brown with a small head. Aroma is weird and not particularly pleasant. Anise and vegetal character with some nuttiness (hazelnut?). Taste is sweet with little hop bitterness to balance it. Anise, char, and smoke. Acrid char is way too dominant, and the alcohol really stands out. Chocolate and metallic notes come and go after letting it sit for awhile. Medium-thin, but smooth. Kind of a strange, and not particularly enjoyable, imperial stout.
