This Imperial Stout is about drawing a line in the sand. It has a consistency similar to 5W-30. Adventurous tattoo artists have used it in place of ink. If left outside during winter, it won’t freeze, even in Minnesota. Beneath the dark exterior, a swirling ambush of coffee and chocolate flavors await, held up by a decadent malt backbone. Like its namesake, The Worthy Adversary’s movements are mysterious. Be wary–it could strike anywhere, any time.

Nose is roast, fudgey chocolate, light coffee grinds and vanilla. Taste is a nice balance of sweet rich chocolate and lightly bitter roast. Touch of caramel and coffee. Creamy and full. Just a really solid Russian imperial leaning on the sweet side.

Pours as a very thick dark brown beer. The aroma has notes of chocolate-ish malt. The taste is lightly sweet, with a tiny bitterness. The palate has great consistency and has a strong body. Great beer; in fact it may be getting me more interested in stouts.

Pours a dark black with tan head 1 finger head with moderate to heavy lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, hint of anise, coffee, hint of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Medium/full bodied with medium to long finish. This is a pretty solid russian imperia.

Looks like an imperial stout. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, touch of sweetness. Bit warming going down from the alcohol. Bitter in the the aftertaste.

Tasty imperial stout. Mine was aged for a year or so and did real well, it seems. Nice chocolate taste, velvety texture and a good bit of cherry-like fruit. This is a slow sipper for sure but smooth and easy drinking. It’s sweet enough to imply a pleasant thickness but not overly heavy. I am into it.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2015 From a bottle aged around 10 months. Pours dark brown with a brown head that fades quicker than it did fresh. Aroma is same. Taste is similar, but overall it’s a bit thin and hollow in the finish. A decent coffee roast comes through as the main player, but overall this beer’s biggest strength is simply how relatively drinkable it is for being double-digit ABV. That’s respectable, but not enough for a beer to stand on. -1 overall, -1 taste.

Pours very dark with lasting brown head leaving great lacing. Aroma is medium roasted coffee and hoppy, nutty oatmeal. Taste is much lighter on the coffee, with moderate roast but the bitterness is more chocolate than coffee. This is relatively sweet for the style; a nice change of pace. Palate is appropriately thick and creamy. For better or worse (mostly better), this is much more approachable and even sessionable(!), rather than the more common heavy, decadent, rich, sipper of an imperial stout. Almost a licorice sweetness. I’m OK with that. Not often you can finish a double digit ABV in a matter of minutes. That said, there’s just something intangible that keeps it from becoming top-notch for me. 8+5+8+4+14=3.9 - 12/12/14

Bottle... Pours clear and nearly black with a small, creamy, off-white head. Gone in a flash. The rich aroma reveals roasted nuts, mocha and brownie brittle. Full-bodied and silky with tingly carbonation. The flavor is a finely balanced blend of blackstrap molasses and caramel sweetness, and charcoal, espresso and ashy bitterness. Also, a nice hint of caramel. Finishes scorched, bitter and tongue-numbing. Really nice beer. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!
