This Imperial Stout is about drawing a line in the sand. It has a consistency similar to 5W-30. Adventurous tattoo artists have used it in place of ink. If left outside during winter, it won’t freeze, even in Minnesota. Beneath the dark exterior, a swirling ambush of coffee and chocolate flavors await, held up by a decadent malt backbone. Like its namesake, The Worthy Adversary’s movements are mysterious. Be wary–it could strike anywhere, any time.

Tasted from a bomber. It poured an opaque brown with a frothy, quickly dissipating head and plentiful, streaky lacing. Deep malty aroma with a hint of coffee-moca. Roasted chocolate malt taste thats strong but not thick.

Tasted out of a bomber. Pours like it’s description says, "5W-30" and looks like a root beer float. This is one thick muthaf***a!! Heavy malt, hop, and sweet aroma. Strong malt taste, kind of alcoholly.

On tap into snifter. Minneapolis. Appearance: very dark, possible black. No transparency. Ring if a small tan head. Aroma: classic imperial stout- heavy chocolate and coffee, vanilla, oak, alcohol. Taste: sweetness upfront with a dark chocolate bitterness in the finish. Nicely balanced. Palate: very full body. Thick texture. With relatively long bitter finish. Overall: a very thick and heavy imperial stout. A good balance of sweet and bitter.

This one can hang with the big dogs and at half the price it is often my first choice...hate to tell people in fear that it may someday become hard to get a hold of.

Probably the best beer I have ever had from Fulton. That said.... Pours black with hints of, caramel, bread, woody. Not boozy at all. But not very complex. A definite start for the dark category from these guys. Hard to tell if it’s slight smokd/wood/coffee since there is a hint of bitterness than does not linger. Possibly just the hops that were utilized. Drinkable. But not worth buying again. Nor do I think aging would benefit this beer.

Rich dark pour with a very dark khaki head that dissipates quickly. Big bold aroma of coffee, chocolate, fruit, and alcohol. Taste and feel is kind of a let down for me, this beer is overly sweet and sticky to me, it has good qualities but when stacked up with other imperials it just isn’t where it should be.

2013 edition. Approximately 8 oz. pour, on tap at McCoy’s in St. Louis Park, MN. Consumed on 12-8-13. Pours dark brown / near black with a small amount of long-lasting, thick, creamy, taupe head. Looks good in the tulip glass. Plum and chocolate in the aroma. Sweet, caramel and brown sugar taste. Some coffee bitterness. Surprisingly sweet aftertaste. Medium to heavy body. Slick and syrupy in the palate. Decent beer in general but subpar in the competitive imperial stout style.

Dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt with peated notes, waxed chocolate and some coffee. Taste is big with dark roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, soy sauce and salt. Okay.

750ml bottle pours an inky black with some thin, beige head. Nose is sugary, cakey, Kahlua, heavy black licorice, molasses. Flavor is very malty, sweet, toasty, licorice, molasses. Slightly hot finish.
