4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Deep dark jet black. Three fingers of mocha head. Two feet away I can smell the coffee. Pretty much ridiculous. Rich coffee notes and vanilla unfold. It smells epic. In the mouth the rich coffee and vanilla are prevalent but they also give way to chocolate and roast. Not heavily but certainly noticeable.

Served on tap at 8th Street Grill in a snifter. WOW color me impressed. In the past Iíve been pretty nonplussed by the offerings Iíve sampled by Fulton. A brewery which is (BTW) less than a 15 minute bike ride from my home. This stout can go toe to toe with any Iíve had in recent memory. The color is a gorgeous rich just this side of ebony delight. The aroma is just a promise of what lies ahead. Rich coffee and warm toffee, hints of cocoa in harmony and balance. There is just the right amount of bitterness, and roasted malt goodness to make this a grand experience throughout. The almost $20.00 a 750ml had held me back from buying this at the liquor store, but I would now make the investment in order to cellar one of these beauties.

Hella good beer! Dark brown pour, beige head. Big dark chocolate up front, followed by vanilla, coffee, the perfect amount of roast. Very rich and full bodied. Great stuff.

4.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2010 On tap at the excellent Acadia Cafe. Pours deep oily black with a thick heavy head. Nose is rather subtle, might be from being served so cold. Iodine and soy sauce can be detected once the beer warms a bit. Mouthfeel is greasy and velvety smooth. Taste is wonderful, dark roasts with hints of vanilla and chocolate. This is a tremendous IS. I met the Fulton guys last night at Acadia (3/09) and they were super friendly.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aromatics start with a boozy tone followed by a mild hoppy undertone. This beer pours deep dark black oil. Light brown head that does disappears and then is just wispy. Taste is heavy chocolate and dark fruit. A mild coffee undertone. Palate is thick like oil. Decent size head. Overall a solid brew would love to see this on cherries and oak aged.

Black, thick, no head. Smells like alcohol, chocolate, smokey, dark coffee, maybe in that order. Sweet, though not very bitter. Heavy bodied. Good, may may be better with a more toned down alcohol scent.

Tap. Nice dark pour with red highlight when held up to light. Off-white head. Aroma of chocolate predominantly, with some roasty coffee. Taste is bitter coffee and lactose. Really good brew.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap @ the Muddy Pig. Looks near black obsidian with some shades of brown swirling about. The head is a dark foamy brown -- decent lacing, too. Nose is dominated by chocolate and dark-roast coffee; a bit subtle so my perpetual winter time stuffy nose canít parse out much more. As expected, the taste is dominated by chocolate and coffee, both of which sit on the dark side of their respective counterparts. Also some yeast and roasted malts come through as it warms up. For its ABV, the alcohol stays remarkably well hidden. The palate might be my favorite part of this beer, though. While I would normally consider it a bit too carbonated for my tastes, it also has a wonderful viscosity that coats the whole mouth. The combined sensations make for a unique effervescence. The commercial description makes this beer sound dark and brooding, but I think itís better described as "charming, for the cynic."
