This Imperial Stout is about drawing a line in the sand. It has a consistency similar to 5W-30. Adventurous tattoo artists have used it in place of ink. If left outside during winter, it won’t freeze, even in Minnesota. Beneath the dark exterior, a swirling ambush of coffee and chocolate flavors await, held up by a decadent malt backbone. Like its namesake, The Worthy Adversary’s movements are mysterious. Be wary–it could strike anywhere, any time.

Dark brown/black pour with a short mocha colored head. Chocolate and coffee aromas with a hint of vanilla and hops. Taste starts sweet and finishes hoppy-bitter and boozy. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, anise, and booze. A mans stout. Time to bury a fallen soldier and stick one in the cellar. I have a feeling my 3.8 rating could go much higher. NOTE: Fulton War & Peace is Worthy Adversary + Peace Coffee (Awesome!)

Pours a dark black with tan head 1 finger head with moderate to heavy lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, hint of anise, coffee, hint of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Medium/full bodied with medium to long finish. This is a pretty solid russian imperia.

Tasty imperial stout. Mine was aged for a year or so and did real well, it seems. Nice chocolate taste, velvety texture and a good bit of cherry-like fruit. This is a slow sipper for sure but smooth and easy drinking. It’s sweet enough to imply a pleasant thickness but not overly heavy. I am into it.

Pours very dark with lasting brown head leaving great lacing. Aroma is medium roasted coffee and hoppy, nutty oatmeal. Taste is much lighter on the coffee, with moderate roast but the bitterness is more chocolate than coffee. This is relatively sweet for the style; a nice change of pace. Palate is appropriately thick and creamy. For better or worse (mostly better), this is much more approachable and even sessionable(!), rather than the more common heavy, decadent, rich, sipper of an imperial stout. Almost a licorice sweetness. I’m OK with that. Not often you can finish a double digit ABV in a matter of minutes. That said, there’s just something intangible that keeps it from becoming top-notch for me.

Bottle... Pours clear and nearly black with a small, creamy, off-white head. Gone in a flash. The rich aroma reveals roasted nuts, mocha and brownie brittle. Full-bodied and silky with tingly carbonation. The flavor is a finely balanced blend of blackstrap molasses and caramel sweetness, and charcoal, espresso and ashy bitterness. Also, a nice hint of caramel. Finishes scorched, bitter and tongue-numbing. Really nice beer. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!
