3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
In short: A sweet Belgian-ish burgundy ale with mild barrel notes. Interesting but too sweet.
How: Bottle 750ml, not sure about the age, donít remember when/how I acquired the bottle, probably in a trade.
The look: Cloudy burgundy body topped by a persistent medium beige head.
In long: Nose has berries-like fruitiness, Melba Toasts and a woody whisky/bourbon that works surprisingly well with the rest of the beer. In mouth the beer has a thick fluffy texture supported by a lively belgian carbonation that didnít suffer from the barrel aging. Taste offers a wide array of flavors. There is a strong toastiness in a crunchy malt backbone that feels like toasted hay and dry bread crumbs. There is an unusual fruitiness that feels like a blend of melons and berries. Sucking on barley candies dipped in caramel. A mild presence of bourbon barrels with a certain perfumy character that feels Jack-Daniels-ish. Barrel aging is really not overdone although there is quite a bit of vanilla. There is a good complexity here but unfortunately the sweetness was just too much for me. A Dark Saison aged in bourbon barrelsÖ and I just complained out loud "they donít make beers like they used to" in case your grandfather is looking for someone to hang out with.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
December 19th, 2012 - Ever since I first visited their brewery up in Ft. Collins on a cold, dreary Fall day, Iíve been smitten by Funkwerks and everything they do. Their brewing mission has a laser-like focus on certain styles, and the bravery it takes to serve these styles to American consumer speaks to a degree of both bravery and skill. Funkwerks deals with light, airy and saison-esque flavors, but they do it it well. And speaking from the future (2014, though I enjoyed this beer at the end of 2012) saisons are now riding a popular wave around the country. I like to think Funkwerks pitched into that trend. But they also brew and serve more unconventional choices, like the Dark Prophet. As its namesake suggests, it is a darker beer with a head that clings dramatically to the glass, creating an upper stratum of archaeological foam and then below large pits and pockets where bubbles popped in their fleeting agonies. Wood and yeast float up from the beer, with globs of pretzel dough in the smell, and pinches of a kind of salty sea air tang and marmite. Moving the beer around a bit adds a new vapor to the cloud, bringing with it pear and light brown sugar. Most notable on the tongue is the palate, where this is likely the foamiest, softest beer Iíve had in ages. Mild chocolate flavoring permeates through this soupy fog of a brew, but itís neither brisk nor bitter, but hints at darker flavors with a medium to heavy body. And I do see why the label proudly proclaims this brew to be a saison. It has all of that imperceptible but flavorful magic going that saisons feature, with added layers of chocolate strewn around. Ratebeer calls this a BSA, but I donít see it - this is a far cry from the caricature of a Belgian Strong Ale, and the way it gets there produces a curiously flavorful beer, which keeps a light touch of malt, darker shades of chocolate, and a baffling mouthfeel that clears in the aftertaste almost as quickly as it descended at the beginning of the sip.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Hazy dark red amber with an excellent head.
Strange aroma is tart, fruity (including apricot) and mildly acerbic.
Flavor largely follows and is also mildly tart, but with a balance of bitter and sweet as well. A lot going on but not completely integrated or balanced.
Medium body and carbonation.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of vanilla and bourbon. Appearance is dark red no head no lacing. Taste is vanilla, oak, some caramel. Its the palate where this beer is a little lacking. The beer isnít thick enough but then itís not a stout. Overall itís a good drink.
