COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

At Freshcraft, pale orange pour with a decent white head. A nice fruity aroma with some orange peel and carbonated goodness. Very tasty saison. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Arminjewell in a trade. Brought to an esbls tasting. A big off white head. Hazy gold. This is a softer saison. Gentle fruit, malts, and yeast. Just a bit of earth. Little flavor for 8%.

Sampled at Funkwerks on 9/30/2012. This saison pours a ison. Nice mix omedium orange gold color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, sweet, mango. Peaches and spicy. A medium to full bodied saison. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are herbal and spicy. Nice carbonation. The mango and peach flavors are subtle and not overly sweet. Nice yeast. Good carbonation. A touch on the sweet side, but still a very enjoyable drinkable saison. A nice mix of flavors, fruit, hops, spices and yeast. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Pours hazy, pale orange, bubbly off white head that persists. Pungent nose of wheat, coriander, esters, yeast, perfume, tropical fruits. Full mouthfeel. Dry, bready, sweet malts, tropical fruits but overtly grain oriented, citrus zest and peppery. Great drinkability. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I canít believe this one hasnít been added the rb previously. From the 750ml, itís hazy, golden orange with heaps of well sustained, orange tinted off white head. Smells of mango, orange, pineapple, caramel and some alcohol. The flavor is very dry, bready and toasty with caramel, a bit of black pepper spicyness and a little citrus zestiness. Itís full bodied, for sure, with a dry bitter finish that lingers just a bit. I drank it about 15 minutes out of the refrigerator, so not too cold. Itís remarkably well balanced for an imperial and oh so drinkable.

Summer 2011 - Ah yes, the eponymous Maori King. Iím dodging any controversy here and now to talk about the beer because I think the beer blogs have done enough. With all the saisons theyíre throwing at us Iím having a hard time giving them each their own place, but Iím also making efforts. This one has a nose with some wheat and biscuit, and much less of the spiciness witnessed in the previous saisons. The flavor also features some tastes of hops, pine and a slightly more ethereal palate with a refreshing mineral aftertaste. I guess it shows how different two saisons can be, and it took a back to back tasting to learn it. This is why we spend money to go to breweries, after all.

dark gold orange color with two fingers of thick white head. Typical Belgian grainy saison classic aroma, with a nice tropical fruit tone. Flavor begins with some fruitiness, then gives way to the Belgian Saison classic flavor, and then ends with a nice funk. This is a fantastic beer.

Bottle shared at the September 2012 Santa Cruz tasting. Pours cloudy orange-gold with a fluffy white head. Apple pie, banana, pepper aroma. Big sweet banana flavor with earthy peppery notes. Ester bomb. High carbonation.
