Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

This my be my first beer considered an Imperial Saison. That title seems a little strange to be honest since most saisons I have are on the lighter, more seasonable side. Light pour. Floral aroma. Sweet and crisp flavor, light body. A little yeast and spice. Light fruits but I didn’t taste the tropical variety.

Sample at HMOG 2015. Spice and pepper dominant. A little astringent yeastiness. Dominant yeast flavors sort of take over. Not something I could drink a lot of but glad I got a chance to try it.

An interesting saison overall. Pours a cloudy orange with a soapy white head. Smells of pear, peach, and apple with saison undertones. Taste is dry with lots of peace and apple, with a herby background. Had in the bottle.

Tasted on 8/1/12 from a capped 750mL bottle at City House for Curtis’ birthday. Pours hazy dark orange with a thick white head that slowly recedes to thick, rocky lace. The nose is bright, green grassy and pine hops with a touch of caramelized orange peel. sweet bread and spicy yeast. The flavor is the touch of sweet bread up front, moving to the caramelized orange peel, grassy, green, bitter hops, and spicy, dry yeast. The body is medium with lively carbonation and a long dry, spicy, and nicely bitter finish.

Hazy orange pour with a big white head. Great lacing. Aroma is citrus, spicy saison yeast, and some dough. Taste is peppery with tropical fruit and a little funk. Dries in the finish.
