Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

Sample at Brewers Rendezvous 7/9/11. Pours a medium off white head, over a slightly hazy dark yellow (SRM 4) body....nose is primarily light floral..........taste is pear, apple, light wintergreen, with the tang of clove on the finish....mouth feel medium, alcohol hidden, carbonation light. This falls well within the style and is thoroughly enjoyable with the phenols adding a nice touch. BJCP 7/3/12/4/7

Bottle, thanks Armin! Orangey gold color with a large frothy white head. Nose is fruity and spicey, some lemon and apples. Flavor is slightly dry, moderately sweet with notes of citrus, banana, lemon, orange juice. Okay.

Transparent gold, shimmering puffy white head. Pine, soap, lemon rule the nose. Flavor is yeasty, thick, peppery with zippy carbonation and lightly frothy bitterness, soapy and overall dry, nicely attenuated to allow softer elements to play. A bit too yeasty, not quite dry or funky enough, not much fruit either, but pleasant.

750mL poured into the Tilquin tumbler. Burnt orange with a fleeting head. Nose is peppery cracker, lemon peel, faint brett accents. This is a tropical saison indeed...I pick up notes of tangerine, pineapple, lemon, and pale malts. Dry, refreshing, and even a bit tart!

750mL thanks to TURDFERGUSON. Pours a hazy peach color with a healthy white head. Large formation, good retention, big lacing. Nose is sugary, melon, lemon detergent, yellow apple. Taste is sharp, hoppy, white sugar, yellow apple, decent booziness. Not a lot of tropical hop notes like I was expecting. Very similar to the normal Funkwerks Saison.

Cloudy straw-yellow with a rocky white head. Wonderful intense aroma of sweet and yeasty fruit, pineapple, citrus, mango along with quite a bit of spiciness, ginger and clove. Chewy, sweet and tart on the tongue with a long drying finish. Absolutely beautiful.

Thanks to the kind soul that opened this at the last Tampa tasting. Pours a slightly hazy amber orange with a white head. Nose is Belgian-style yeast, tropical fruit, mango, and peach with a hint of banana and chalk. Flavor is similar with lingering tropical fruit and banana in the finish. Light to medium in body and an interesting take on the normal saison.
