COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

A soft, steady pour into my New Belgium tulip produces a two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a ruddy, amber hue that shows a lightly hazed, yellow tinged, pale honey color when held up to the light. The aroma smells of hoppy citrusy and tropical fruit notes, musty sun-dried hay, and earthy yeasty spice character, a touch of cracker like malt character. There is a slight nuttiness that has toasted grassy overtones to it, and this melds well with the musty fermentation character. As the beer warms up it picks up a bit of spicy, warming alcohol character.

The beer is quite carbonated, with lots of prickly carbonation; this works nicely with the peppery yeast and hop character. Lots of earthy, musty fermentation character, that provides an almost savory quality to this beer; this balances the spicy, fruity hop flavors quite well. Tangelo zest, kumquat, definitive guava notes, Curacao orange zest, and lots of floral fruit notes that sort of lean towards fruit and bird of paradise. The body is definitely light, this is quite quaffable, but has a touch of viscosity to it towards the finish; definitely hits what an "Imperial" Saison needs to be, for whatever that means. The hops provide a firm bitterness that lingers in the finish and gives this beer a fairly good bite; though this is softened a bit by the musty, yeast phenolices.

I was expecting something a bit hoppier than this, but the balance that this has between the hop and fermentation character makes it easy for me not to miss an overly aggressive hop character. I definitely like the New World hop focus, and in the end, I am digging that it is somewhat subtle from what I was expecting. I really like the nutty complexity that the nose (especially), and the flavor (to a bit lesser degree) achieve, it adds a bit more character that boosts the more’ish character of this beer. In some ways this is better than it should be; the components don’t quite add up to the whole that this achieves.

http://imgur.com/FkCj4Kh - Pours hazy orange with overzealous white head. Smells of citrus, bubblegum, and vanilla. Drinks smoothly with little lingering hop bitterness. Light bodied. Tastes of light mango, citrus, light malt, and wood. Highly effervescent.
