Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

Root Down, Denver tap ($8): Pours slightly cloudy orange with a white head. Aroma is saison funk, tropical fruit, spices, citrus. Taste is pretty funky and fruity. Alcohol is slightly felt in the taste. Body is somewhere around medium. Nice amount of funk. Hoppy undertones. This was pretty good. The fruitiness and the different hops make this one an interesting sipper.

Cloudy golden with ample fine and persistent head. Yeasty sake tropical nose. Fruit clove. Herbal light pine edges. Very creamy feel. Lightly tart and bitter finish. Unique surprising and well done.

750 mL from Liquor Galaxy. Finally a Funkwerks offering that I really enjoy. The nose is very aromatic with pungent pineapple, pepper, mango, and notes of lemon zest, hay and honey. It’s a hair sweeter than I like my saisons, but that’s not to say this is too sweet. I just like the style bone dry. The juiciness enhances the fruit bouquet in the palate, making for a beer that certainly lives up to its name. Lots of fruity notes in the flavor ranging from mango to orange to kiwi. Finish is a little peppery. This is honestly a very nice saison at a great price point.

750ml bottle crushed with the Dude. Pours a hazed orangish copper with a thick white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, mostly passionfruit and pineapple, some sweet malt presence. Flavor is sweet, quite fruity, with some slight bitterness. The New Zealand hops provide a nice tropical fruit and mint presence. A bit boozy, full bodied with a lively carbonation. Finishes bitter with a slight booze burn. Overall, a bit too boozy and sweet for me.

Bottle: The aroma consists of tropical fruits, orange, orange peel, mango, and some light dusty yeast notes. It pours a slightly hazy golden-orange with a large orange-tinged off-white head that has good retention. There is some soapy webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick moderate tropical fruits, pineapple, and citrus, The finish has light lemon/lemon peel, yeast, and pepper. It’s medium bodied with lively carbonation that is a tad prickly at times. Overall, I like the regular Saison much better.

Draft from the source (GABF weekeend) - Pumped to try this one. Clear gold pour with nice white head. Aroma is spicy and delicous fruity. Flaovr has more spice, tropical fruits, barely funky. I know I didn’t detail it, but there is kind of a lot going on here. Lingering fruity finish. Just lovely.

An immense Saison! This teeters on the edge b/w Saison and Tripel...but regardless of the style, it does not disappoint. This is an incredible brew. Fans of either the Saison or Tripel style will appreciate (and enjoy) this amazing beer.
