COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

Tap at Funkwerks - first of all, I love how their idea of an imperial saison is one that sits at 7% - awesome - nose is very crisp and peppery from the NZ hops - they also add a strong Sauvignon character - some spice and light phenols - flavor is fairly dry and semi tart - pepper character from the hops combines wonderfully with the spiciness imparted by the yeast - some Sauvignon white grape character - light funk on the tail end - love it!

750ml bottle that my sister-in-law brought back from Denver, thanks Alyssa! Bottled as Tropic King at 7.5% ABV. Pours a cloudy, darker gold colored body with a big, two finger-width, pillow-soft, frothy and foamy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is really nice. A bit of a white pepper blends with some crisp, very lightly sweetened wheats and grainy pale malts along with a good amount of fruitiness. Tropical fruits with a distinct passion fruit and mango as well as some citruses giving this a touch of zest. A light bread, some peach, apricot, grass, and a hint of ginger. Flavor is slightly tart initially with some peppered yeast, citrus, and light wheat notes. Tropical fruits come along in the middle as the wheat malts and lightly sweetened pale malts get a bit grainy alongside the yeasty pepper. A touch of ginger towards the end as well as some peach and melon fruits before this finishes with a good amount of yeasty white pepper, a light grassy bitterness, some slightly tart citruses, and just a slightly noticeable heat. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a lively carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid saison. I really dug the aroma and the flavor was nice as well. Yeasty, fruity, and crisply malted with a lively carbonation. Nice beer.

This poured a semi cloudy lighter orange color with a white head. Aroma was lots of yeasty notes, some light citrus fruits and some grain. Flavor was grainy, lighter malt, some spice and yeast notes, with light fruit. A bit over carbonated but overall a decent beer.

Rated at the 2012 RB Pgh May tasting. Big thanks to Horny Devil. Nice big foamy head. A slightly fruity aroma with a farmy background. Lots of co2 on the palate but its a gentle non-sizzling kind of co2; nice. Burns a little going down the hatch. Fading lacing. Volatile on the olfactory after a while. Fairly alky forward. Finish is warming.

Bottle. Orange colored, off white head, decent lacing, and cloudy. The smell is yeasty, fruits, earth, Belgian, and sweet. The taste is the same with a little more funk and alcohol.

It was decent, but kind of a let down for my first Funkwerks beer.

Thanks to Craig. Huge tropical fruit notes, sweet malts, dusty notes in the nose, lemony, spicy. A solid bitterness that gets followed by a malty sweetness and a carbonic finish. I did not really care for this.

This shows all the qualities of classic saison, but brings a complex, fruity aspect to both nose and palate. Peach and Asian pear add to the herbal/funky nature of the beer. Beautiful mouthfeel.
