COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a bright, semi-hazy golden orange color with a moderate white head that faded to a partial layer. Aroma is heavily peppered, along with a spiciness from the earthy yeast and the fruits present (tangerine, peach, and mango). Smooth, moderately sweet entry with some sweet fruitiness (peach, tangerine) before giving way to a moderately dusty, dry yeastiness with a nice peppery compliment that lingers into the dry finish where it is paired with a soft tropical fruitiness. Moderate carbonation and crisp, lively mouth feel. Overall, a real nice mixture of dry earthiness and fruity flavors.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours very hazy deep golden with a huge frothy and slightly fizzy offwhite head that leaves lots of sticky and spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is fruity and slightly spicy with crackers, freshly baked white bread, overripe tropical fruits, overripe citrus fruits, moist grass, dry soil, white pepper corns, overripe apples and hints of alcohol. Taste is slightly sweet, tiny bitter, fruity and tiny phenolic with white bread, baked pears, overripe tropical fruits, grapefruit juice, orange zest, lemon zest, banana bread, grapeskins, apple skins, marzipan and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, slightly crisp, round and medium bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter, estery and phenolic with yeasty dough, hay, dry soil, baked pears, marzipan, banana bread, orange zest, lemon zest and grapeskins. Bit too high on the boost.

On tap at Breckenridge at the Ballpark in Denver. Pours deep orange colored with a small off white head. Aroma of tropical fruits as expected, some light funk, and a hint of spice. Flavor is on the sweeter side with lots of bubble gum notes and some tropical fruits, sweet wheaty malts, and very little zesty saison like barnyard yeast going on here. Medium plus bodied and medium carbonation. Overall I found this to be only OK, but not bad.

Hazy golden coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall frothy white head. Aroma of pale malt, yeast, grass, hay, wheat and a lot of light herbal spiciness. Medium-bodied; Strong malt and yeast characteristic all the way through with a pungent fruit flavour and some lighter sweetness and a touch of herbs and spices. Aftertaste shows some nice fruity flavours, but the showcase is the malt and especially the drying characteristics that are noticeable. Overall, a good saison with a nice and fragrant aroma and a well-balanced flavour. Definitely worth trying if you can find this! I sampled this pint on draught from Mellow Mushroom in Denver, Colorado for US$4.99 on 08-June-2014.

Cloudy orange, orange juice like body. Medium to large fizzy frothy white head. Aroma is yeasty, super fruity, as described. Flavor much the same. Lighter medium bodied and highly carbonated. Some alcohol present. Touch of spice. Ginger stays complimentary. Very fruity. Certainly ’imperial’.
