Our goal at Funkwerks is to make good beer for our customers. Our intention was not to disrespect the Māori people or their culture in naming our Māori King beer. Out of respect, we are re-branding this beer as Tropic King. This is our new Imperial Saison! Bursting with a lot of fruity tropical characteristics of passionfruit, mango, and peach from the New Zealand Rakau hops we used. Combined with the pepper and Ginger flavors produced by our house yeast, this is a flavor extravaganza.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a bright, semi-hazy golden orange color with a moderate white head that faded to a partial layer. Aroma is heavily peppered, along with a spiciness from the earthy yeast and the fruits present (tangerine, peach, and mango). Smooth, moderately sweet entry with some sweet fruitiness (peach, tangerine) before giving way to a moderately dusty, dry yeastiness with a nice peppery compliment that lingers into the dry finish where it is paired with a soft tropical fruitiness. Moderate carbonation and crisp, lively mouth feel. Overall, a real nice mixture of dry earthiness and fruity flavors.

Tropic King is a strange animal of a beer - I mean that in the most complimentary way. The inclusion of New Zealand hops gives this beer a distinct tropical fruit aroma that plays well with the yeast esters. While the flavor isnít as tropical as the aroma or name implies, Tropic King reveals some bittersweet citrusy fruit flavors. Thereís some nice black pepper spice and an earthiness thatís not quite grassy but close. I loved how fresh and crisp this beer felt on the palate. While I didnít love Tropic King as much as Funkwerks Saison, this brew offers a lot of refreshment and unique flavors.

Bottle. A- Tropical fruits, hoppy, yeasty. A- Orange color, cloudy liquid, white frothy head. T- Slightly bitter, bready, tropical fruits, mango, peach, caramel, subtle funk, spices. P- Medium body, average texture, medium high carbonation, smooth finish. O- A lot different than I expected. There is bitterness that I didnít expect but wasnít necessarily bad. I was expecting this to be a fruitier version of their flagship Saison. I was quite wrong. This resembles that beer in no ways. I was hoping for a Saison that was full of juicy fruit notes, but this was more like a White IPA. Not bad, but not really what I wanted.

Pours a beautiful clear straw yellow until the settled yeast is added to the glass and fills it with a nice haze. Firm white head that retains itself for quite some time. Aromaís are tropical with pineapple mango and bready notes as well. Smells bright and sunny. Flavors are good sweetness upfront followed by a rustic dryness. Mouthfeel is rich and rounded at first then grainy dry with some spiciness on the finish. Good balance and big flavors on this imperial saison.

Draft. Light golden body with a frothy, white head. Light aroma of pineapple, mango, toasted grain, floral hops, basement. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture turning sticky, moderate carbonation. Some peppery alcohol in the finish helps erase some of the sweetness. Fruity flavors with a bit of floral and spice from the hops.

"Bright, vibrant, fruity, yeasty, just what I was looking for. Aroma of yeast, light hops and lots of passion fruit & mango. Flavor much the same. Refreshing and complex at the same time. Very nice."
