COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Solenna pairs the fruitiness of a traditional Belgian yeast strain with the subtle spicy character of Brettanomyces and the floral notes of German hops. Notes of candy apple, cinnamon, and fresh-cut grass give way to a dry finish and firm lingering bitterness.

Tap at The Cheeky Monk. Pours clear ruby with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is cookie and toast malt with dates, cherries and light earthy hops. Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark reddish brown pour with tan head, nicely carbonated. Aroma brought notes of orange peel, grapefruit, some dull malts with a touch of cracker, biscuit, nice bright lemon peel, this smells pretty good actually, the spices and floral notes work well together. Taste is a mix of slight orange peel, grass, hints of cinnamon, clove, touch of earth, grainy notes come through into dull mineral, and cracker notes, slight orange peel, finishing dull, slightly dry, mineral. Taste falls short a bit.

Pretty much what I thought it would be. Aroma is floral, sweet, slight funk, a little basement, and faint spice. Taste is floral, yeast, aged brew character, and faint spice. Palate is fizzy with a slight bitterness and medium body.

3fourths (8238) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 27, 2013
UPDATED: APR 28, 2013 bottle. lightly hazed amber body with a medium tan-colored head (foamy, large bubbles, some retention). apple cider yeast-heavy nose of burnt cinnamon, nutmeg and clove with rotting red apples and bananas and cedar barkdust-like red malt/overused noble hops. the brett is pretty much indistinct other than a sweat sock quality, and the hops are floral and citrus-like but they don’t integrate in the nose at all. medium body with creamy mouthfeel and mostly smooth malt (which is something of a surprise from this brewery); browned red apple malt, mostly sweet, with a dried grass noble hop flavor and moderate bitterness (moderate for the style but a little too high for the balance of this beer). tartness of brett combines with sourish red malt and noble hops to create a bit of a mess: bitter, sweet, musty, spiced and unclean. though it is nice to see the barkdust / generic spice mix character is not so apparent in the flavor as the nose, but the cinnamon / nutmeg / xmas apple cider flavor is unappealing. points for the body, much improved malt texture over their previous products. points off for some fermentation defects a mish-mash of flavors with no integration or focus. with brett in the bottle you certainly could see better integration in the future (along with having it dry out, which I think will also help). I tried this as Bastogne at the 2012 GABF and found it more disappointing (2.1-2.4 area), so they’ve seemed to clean up some defects, but the recipe is just poorly thought-out. you should *not* be going for a red apple / caramel character in your beer (really, apple + caramel is the minimum you would expect from a horribly-fermented beer with amber/caramel malt), especially Belgian beer. though Funkwerks has shown themselves competent with their Tropic King and Saison, this $13 drainpour reminds me that they are still 1) throwing darts at the wall, and 2) unable to tell when their beer contains fermentation defects.

Pours a hazy copper color. Grapefruit on the aroma eases funky yeast characteristics. Caramel and raisin do the same on the taste. Finishes fairly clean and dry.

On tap at the brewery: pours cloudy burnt orange, frothy khaki head. Decent lacing. Noise is heavy grassy and caramel malts, orange, funk and earth. Flavors much of the same. Somewhat bready sweetness and funk bitterness. Lighter bodies and soft carbonation. Pleasant for sure ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
