Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop bitterness leaving us this very unique Imperial Saison. Tropical fruit flavors coming from the unique New Zealand hop variety, Rakau. Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, pepper and ginger.

Bottled. Pours golden with a fluffy sticky white head that lasts the duration. Lively carbonation streams from the bottom of the etched glass. Aroma of must, bubblegum, fresh hay. More like a big golden, but does have a pepper bite which balances out the big banana tropical flavors. Creamy palate. Quite enjoyable if unusual for the style.

Bottle @ Berggrens källare. Hazy amber. An initial Aroma of grass, flowers and milk. Maltiness and nice tropical fruits, tangdrine, apricots, wood and black pepper in the background. Highly carbonated dry, slightly sweet taste with a good maltiness. Flavors of alcohol, white and black pepper, yeast, apricots, tangerines and oranges. Sticky finish with sprawling higher alcohols, loads of pepper and quite high bitterness.

Draft at the brewery. Slightly hazy orange copper color with a thick foam ring and film. Big tropical aroma, mango and passion fruit and peach. Dry flavor despite the heft, Munich malts evident. Medium plus bodied, well carbonated. Good.

Bottled June 5, 2015, drunk 12/31/15.
Same massively carbonated appearance, with a huge, slow-to-recede white head and a lightly hazy golden-copper body.
Like the regular saison, I’m again getting more of an abbey trippel character in the nose than any saison notes I’ve ever smelled. Lots of pepper, yellow fruits, alcohol mixing with esters (light banana and bubblegum...) and more maltiness (obviously) than the regular version. A faint touch of guava and mango remain behind, from the hops, but they have mostly passed on, due to the age. Good honey and bread from the malts, with no flaws.
Softer, more supple, malty texture provides a better vessel for absorbing some of this alcohol and the sharper, apricot-peach character. White pepper and black pepper again, with lightly warming alcohol but a good bitterness and dryness on the finish. Carbonation seems a little less problematic here, though it’s still very high through the entirety of the bottle. Again, a fine Belgian beer, with no flaws, but seems completely like a Belgian Strong Golden and very little like a saison (I guess the pepperiness is about the extent of it).

Draft at FS Addison. Deep, slightly hazy golden. Sour aroma. Some sweetness in the taste. A nice dry and sour saison. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
