This beer pours with a voluminous white head from a high percentage of raw wheat. Aroma is of orange zest and orange blossoms combined with hints of saffron. The flavor is crisp, clean and dry with a supple tartness. A summer brew that is great year-round.

Ingredients:
2-row malt, Pilsner malt, wheat malt, flaked wheat, flaked oats, orange zest, grapefruit zest, coriander, ginger, chamomile.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a moserately hazy yellow color with a moderate, tight white head that faded to a film. Aroma of wheat, orange peel, ginger, and another spice I can’t identify. Smooth, lightly sweet entry with some light citrus and some soft chamomile that transitions into a moderate yeastiness combined with a light spiciness (coriander) that finishes moderately dry with a light fruitiness. Moderate carbonation and lively mouth feel. Overall, its pretty solid, although a tad muddled. It would probably take another visit to clear up all the pieces.

Summer 2011 - Apparently the Funkwerks white has undergone a change since I lost had it. Back then, in the summer of 2001 this was another one of Funkwerk’s characteristically quiet beers, tip-toeing so as not to offend the drinker who, you know, might enjoy the stuff. Capping the taster glass was a pillowy head, and below that a pale yellow color. The aroma spanned a wide swath of aromas, including spices, cork, black pepper, lemon and orange zest. The flavor leans more heavily on the lemon and citrus with a delicious, light palate that almost cleanses the tongue between sips.

In short: An over-carbonated wheat beer. Might be a good but my bottle was awefully harsh
How: Bottle 750ml, consumed fresh a few weeks after receiving it from drfabulus, Not your fault Jeff
The look: Cloudy yellow body topped by a medium white head with medium retention
In long: Nose is moderately spicy/herbal (coriander and lemongrass mainly) and is bursting with wheat. I suspect that this wheat outburst is due to the exaggerated carbonation that throws aromas in the air. That’s the beer problem (or at least my bottle), the carbonation is so aggressive that you just cannot keep the beer in your mouth. This carbonation is twice what you get from a soda-pop or a macro beer. Not fun. I noticed tart wheat, lemon zest, fresh bananas, yeast and spiciness but overall because of the carbonation the flavors were surfing over my taste buds, barely making contact. Harsh, minerals sensation, very astringent, sensation of something pinching your tongue. There might be a good beer in there but the bottle I tried to drink just didn’t let me taste it. This is a top-rated witbier, so drinking this lame bottle was a big disappointment, it was as disappointing as the date I had with a cop (well, I didn’t know she was a cop at first, she was undercover as a prostitute).

Drinks more like German Hefeweizen than Belgian Wit, but that is splitting hairs. Gorgeous aromatics of banana and light citrus. Lighter bodied and crisp on the palate. Orange zest finish.

750ml bottle that my sister-in-law brought back from Denver, thanks Alyssa! Pours a cloudy, bright yellow-gold colored body with a big, lively, three finger-width, soft and foamy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is really nice for a wit. Fresh, grainy pils malts with a light wheat and a soft bread. Pretty yeasty with a light pepper and a gentle coriander and ginger spice. Flowery with some orange zest and a touch of sharp, tart citruses. Flavor is similar. Starts with a slight citrus tartness that quickly moves into a crisp, grainy pils malt and fresh flaked wheat backing. Yeasty spice comes in with a touch of pepper and a good amount of flowers. A very light ginger and a bit more of a coriander spice comes out towards the end as well as some orange zest and another hint of citrus tartness. Finishes dry, crisp, and clean with a light yeasty spiciness balanced with a soft, grainy, bready wheat and pils maltiness. Lengthy aftertaste with some orange zest lingering following a soft and smooth, light-medium body with a lively, but soft carbonation. Overall, for a style that I often find boring and tend to shy away from, this is a pretty excellent beer. Kind of a mix between a saison and a white. Great malt backing with the soft, bready, grainy pils and wheat malts. Gentle spiciness and floral notes throughout with a nice orange zest and hint of citrus tartness. Pretty impressed with this one.

Bottle (with no clear bottling date) with much thanks to ratman. Pours with a murky, electric yellow hued body and an absolutely massive, rocky white head. Aromas are of sharply spicy, lots of grainy malt and robust base and wheat malt character. Grassy and peppery phenols, spices: grains of paradise, coriander, ginger. Lots of zesty and zippy citrus. Tangerine and grapefruit, a touch herbal. Great smelling wit. Great flavor too. Lots of biscuity, bready, grainy wheat malt, zesty, citrus and tart wheat with a peppery phenol and medium spice. Coriander, black pepper, tart. Lightly bitter citrus pith. Very nice floral esters. Lively bubbles, bone dry, floral throughout the duration. Amazingly good as are almost all the beers that come out of this facility. Really a great beer inspired by a traditional wit.

Maybe the best white I’ve had. Pours a hazy yellow with a white foamy head that disappears quickly. The aroma has a bit of sour lemon along with some orange and some sweet malts. The flavor has the sweet and sour going on as well as some banana, clove and pepper, a bit of rootbeer. It has a nice bite to it making it very refreshing. Thanks to my nephew in Boulder for remembering his old uncle.

750mL bottle, no date from Lukas Liquors in Lone Tree, back in early November. Gusher, but probably my fault for letting it warm too much. Cloudy straw gold with some tiny suspended sediment, and a quickly fading fizzy off-white head, easily rousable to at least a finger, but dissipates within a few seconds. I can easily pick up on orange and wheat, fairly yeasty with some chamomile behind. Lightly sweet and perfumey. Flavor follows suit, lots of citrus and a tinge of spiciness--must be the ginger. Dry finish, bitterness peaks at a 2. Overcarbonated--as soon as the beer hits my mouth it turns to 1/2 foam--with a watery light body. Enjoyable enough--no funk though.

Big thanks to Secret Santa for this one. Cloudy orange, big white head. Smells like orange juice and wild yeast. My notes actually say "smells like funky Tang", which could be misconstrued. Very sweet, orange and coriander. Oddly milky, to, in a good way. Dry, ever so slightly woody finish.

750ml bottle. Pale straw orange with a huge billowy white head that settles eventually, nice lacing. Semi white beer, grains, ginger, orange zest. Smooth yet thin, somewhat sweet, foamy, slight bitterness at the end but dry. Decent beer.
