Our search for the finest cocoa nibs brought us to the far corners of the earth. We tried them all: raw nibs from Guatemala; roasted jewels from the West Indies. But the most potent, intensely chocolatey ones we found hailed from the far-away reaches of Brazil. But there was one problem. We had to get them back. So with sacks in tow, we stole away with those precious nibs and smuggled them, along with fragrant Madagascar vanilla beans, deep into the reaches of a pitch black milk porter. And so, Nib Smuggler Chocolate Milk Porter was born.

Growler shared at Woodshop 8. Pours a clear, deep red. Weaker foam. Nose is peanut shell, mild plastic. BMan described it as a new basketball. Taste is hazelnut tea, weak coffee. Palate is thin. Not sure what happened here.

Aroma is yahoo. Chocolate watery aroma. Sweet forward with a milk chocolate back bone. For 6 percent pretty amazing. Nice balance I would get if local. Thin fading head. Only complaint a big to sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours unclear thick dark cocoa with a big creamy lacey beige cocoa head. Aroma is light nutty vanilla wafers. Flavors brings sweet dark cacao nibs on a pure clean and lightly creamy body. It is not too roasted or sweet at all, but a nice balance of malts and dark cacao.

Tap at Funky Buddha’s 2nd year anniversary. Black, tan head. Nose is artificial chocolate (though I know it’s real nibs) and coffee. Taste is cocoa, dark chocolate. Dry, bitter finish.

Draft at Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia, PA. Pours a dark chocolate brown color that’s almost black and opaque except for faint mahogany edges when held to a light. One and a half finger beige head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Robust roasty aroma with a nice balance of dark malt, lactic cream and sweeter notes. There’s a strong dark chocolate presence along with robust coffee bean and oatmeal countered by sweeter cooca, toffee, caramel and hazelnut. Faint earthy hops as well. Medium bodied but a bit thinner than expected with an intense overly roasted dark malt character that dominates the flavor. Really dry and bitter with hints of burnt toast, charred malt, robust coffee, dark chocolate and oatmeal. Not nearly as complex or well balanced as the nose suggests. Subtle lactic creaminess but all of the sweeter notes are completely overpowered by the roasted dark malts and intense dark chocolate flavor. Not a bad beer but very one dimensional and verging on acrid. Disappointing, especially coming from a brewery that I usually enjoy which specializes in dessert beers.
