Our search for the finest cocoa nibs brought us to the far corners of the earth. We tried them all: raw nibs from Guatemala; roasted jewels from the West Indies. But the most potent, intensely chocolatey ones we found hailed from the far-away reaches of Brazil. But there was one problem. We had to get them back. So with sacks in tow, we stole away with those precious nibs and smuggled them, along with fragrant Madagascar vanilla beans, deep into the reaches of a pitch black milk porter. And so, Nib Smuggler Chocolate Milk Porter was born.

On draft at the Funky Buddha, poured a dark brown color with aromas of chocolate, vanilla, roast, and sweet malt. Flavor is a great mixture of all the aromas that blended nicely on the palate. After each sip it left me wanting more, and more of this amazing brew.

On draft at Funky Buddha. WOW. This has to be one of the best non-Berliners they have done. Pours a typical stout brown with a tan head. The nose is what distinguishes this beer for sure. It has a significantly pronounced cocoa nib smell with a some underlying dark chocolate, vanilla, possible lactose, and some light roast. Flavor is amazingly chocolatey- cocoa with dark chocolate, nibs, and a bit of dryness in the finish, probably courtesy of the yeast. The nose and flavor together are very unique- the closest thing I can think of is Southern Tier Choklat, but with MUCH more balance. Some might consider this over-the-top, but it is a chocolate sweet stout; it is just as it says.

This is by far one of my favorite beers of all time. I’m a sucker for good chocolate so that is a part of this scenario. Nib pours a very dark brown, nearly black. The aroma is a combination of dark cocoa nibs, sweet malts, with a hint of vanilla. The smoothness was perfect and the temperature also seemed to be perfect. (Had it at the Buddha on tap.) This is the perfect beer to drink after a big steak and potato dinner. The palate has a nice hint of chocolate for quite some time. Supperb!

Growler thanks to johndoe8 on BA. Dark brown in color but lets some light through. Small tan head. The aroma is great and intense. Loads of chocolatey nibs and some roast and vanilla notes to go with it. The flavor is also nib city, very chocolatey but the integration could be a bit better. Sweet and mildly tart even. Medium-bodied and fairly smooth and drinkable. A good first Funky Buddha tick.

Hand bottle @ Papsø. Pours a dark amber brown color with a small off-whit ehead. Has a roasted malty coffee aroma with hints of chocolate. Sweetish roasted malty coffee and chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty coffee and chocoalte finish.

Once again, a tip of the hat to Josh and Jacqui for bringing this one to the Bloomington hotel mini-hang! Pretty nice pour, dark brown with some amber highlights, nothing inky but still a dense and hefty look. Nose is quirky, with a mild tart note that pops from the start along with char, and sweet vanilla. Mouthfeel a bit on the thin side. Initially, the mild infection is a shade off-putting but it somehow grew a bit addictive, with a nice peanuty flavor combining well with the sweet notes and the grainy, roasty lower layer.

Bottle pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma is cocoa, chocolate, and roast. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is more cocoa. Its pretty strong. I like that. Only downside to this brew is the brown paper bag flavor. The oxidation is pretty strong.

Bottle shared by Rustyham. Pours deep brown black with a dissipating brown head. Aroma of dried cocoa and ale esters. Medium to full bodied with semi soft carbonation. Flavor of chocolate, dark roasted malts, and mild bittering hops. What made this one really interesting is that you picked up some nutshell flavors, and that it was not overly sweet. Semi dry finish. Very well done.
