COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
My goal in building the recipe for Fallen Apple was to create a seasonal specialty that was in and of itself a celebration. I start with fresh-pressed cider from early harvest apples we get from Kickapoo Orchards in Gays Mills. Fermentation leaves the cider tart and champagne-like. I then brew a cream ale designed to put some sweetness and body back into the beer, which rounds out the sour apple notes. This combination of ethereal apple flavor grounded in an “everyman’s” beer makes for a festive and potent brew.

Picked up a six-pack of 12-oz bottles at Bob McFarland Liquors in McFarland, Wisconsin. Pours a clear and crisp reddish amber brew with a fast dissolving white head that leaves behind a thin white ring and clean top. Aroma of a sour apple scented shampoo one would detect at any hair salon along with some caramel malt and a touch of flowery hops. Taste is better than its aroma. A good balance of caramel malt and sour apple cider with a dry biscuity aftertaste. Finish is semi-sweet at first and then a dry bready flavor that slowly disappears. An interesting fruit beer, but not over the top.

Or a fruit beer. They missed the mark on this one. It smells like a hair salon. It is a nice looking beer, resembling brandy in my snifter. Little carbonation. Flavor is light apple, hint of spice, and grain. These guys are usually solid but this beer needs some work.

12oz. Bottle: Sweet aroma of light apples and grains. Poured amber/apple juice in color with a small, off-white head that diminished quickly but lasted around the edges only. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Full of tiny particles throughout. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of apples, apple juice, and slight bready malt. Light to medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Apple juice and grain finish is slightly dry.

Nice brandy like appearance. The nose unfortunately was that of a hair salon. Grainy body with a sour, faintly apple finish.

Bottled. The first thing that crossed my mind when I opened this was "why the hell would you make this??" Poured clear apple juicy orange with a short dusting of off-white head that stuck around for a while. The aroma picked up sweet apple juice along with pale and some vegetal maltage.. darker apple feel to it as a final impression. The flavor had creamy pale malts and apple juicy at its center with sharper apple skin tartness (a little cidery) and some vegetal notes around the edges. Lighter-bodied and creamy on the palate with a refreshing tartness around the edges.. This accomplished what it was shooting for, but I didn’t much care for it.

12 oz bottle. Poured a clear medium orange color. Head was very fizzy and reduced to nothingness in less than a minute. Smelled of biscuity malt and apple juice. Dry on the tongue with delicate acidity. Tasted predominantly of apple cider with a biscuity malt backbone. Eh.

Orange color. Smell of malt, Granny Smith apples, spices and a hint of caramel. Taste of apples, malt, bread, spices and flowers. Acidic and dry.

Bottle. At first it smells like the canned Budweiser my grandpa drank. After a bit it smells more like what it is, a cream ale with cider thrown in. I’ll call this an apple shandy made with nicely tart apple juice. However the juice tastes like the stuff from concentrate not fresh cider.
