BeerBelcher (698), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Mar 14, 2008 I didn’t really expect much from this beer as a brief review of its packaging led me to believe that it was somehow a collection of spare bits from around the brewery, but I picked it up because I’d enjoyed other Furthermore beers. And I was glad I did, as I enjoyed this beer, but also found it quite interesting because it was unique and hard to classify or compare to other beers I’ve had.
This beer is beautiful. It is a deep red color with brilliant clarity and a thick creamy head of tightly packed tiny bubbles that didn’t overflow the rim of the glass but was durable enough to leave great lacing on the glass and insulate the underlying liquid from first sip to the last. Aroma and flavor were pleasant and not overpowering, but kind of puzzling. It is kind of as described. I didn’t detect the English influence as it was the mildest of the three included recipes, but I definitely got an APA type hoppiness in both the flavor and aroma and a Belgian spiciness. There was something else going on here that I couldn’t quite put my finger on; a maltiness that was a bit cerealy but not unpleasant. I wish I’d purchased two bottles of this stuff so I could’ve continued my investigation into some of the flavors therein.
This is a good (not great beer), but an extremely interesting one. There’s a lot of flavors in that bottle.
I would recommend this beer. I bought a 12oz single at 3 Cellars in Franklin, WI.
hopdog (4444), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 25, 2008 12oz bottle. Poured a deeper ambersih color with an averaged sized off white head. Lots of suspended floaters. Aromas of fruitiness, herbal, toffee, yeast, and bready. Tastes of toffee, fruitiness, and some candi sugar. Some spices came out as the beer warmed (especially in the aromas). Alcohol content well hidden. General_Gao (2368), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jul 13, 2008 12oz bottle. Enticing aroma of cereal grains, subdued clove, and toffee. There was also a whiff of alcohol. Poured a clear reddish-brown color with a fluffy khaki colored head. Head retention and lacing were good. Medium bodied and slightly sweet with mild to moderate hop bitterness that peaked at the end. The flavor mix was very unusual/unique including the likes of toffee, clove, alcohol (like a hint of Jagermeister), grass, citrus, and dark fruits. Somewhat difficult to wrap your olfactory lobe and tasted buds around. TURDFERGUSON (1021), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Jul 7, 2008 bottle from iowaherkeye. thanks! pours a dark amber with a big yellow cream colored foamy head. Nose is sweet and hoppy, almost like a PNW barleywine. Flavor begins sweet with caramel malt and then turns bitter and licorice like. Very messy and not too easy to drink. Rciesla (712), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Jun 2, 2008 Bottle. Pours an amber body with ½ finger head. Aroma is sweet malt, Belgian style pale malts. Flavor is Belgian malt, sweet malt, and some etoh in the finish. Eh. I remembered this being better. kmweaver (1813), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA May 29, 2008 12oz bottle, courtesy of a trade from a while ago. Thanks! Pours a clear, medium dark orange-amber color; light tan head with patchy lacing. Slightly bland aroma: red fruits, sweet candy, and fusel alcohols; nail polish / acetone. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: light carbonation; chewy candy sugars and red fruits and sticky maltiness; not very dense or flavorful for the levels of alcohol; slightly less rough than the nose suggests, at least; messy, bland beer. Medium finish: wet malts, some toastiness, and fruit; some lingering warmth.
