COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our coffee beer is more "iced coffee" than "double-mocha-mud", more "summer quencher" than "winter warmer". I start with a brown Mexican lager to compliment the coffee of choice, "Nicaragua" (beans from the La Fem Grower’s Co-operative, roasted by Just Coffee of Madison.) I include flaked maize both for added creaminess and to appease the sun gods. Extra-warm fermentation lets the yeast create more interesting flavors (the California-common effect, or "Vapor Beer", if you speak Beer-Spanglish.) Hop bitterness is increased to offset the sweet flavor of un-brewed coffee. Whole beans are soaked in the beer during cold maturation - the alcohol extracts and retains aromatics that would otherwise be lost to hot water. You want numbers? Well, numbers you shall have: 15 degrees Plato; 37 IBU’s; 5.3% ABV.

Bottle: dark copper/light brown with an off white head, nose of coffee, flavor... well it tastes like a cold cup of coffee grinds which doesn’t do it for me.

This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.

/hinting towards coffee. It is a lighter beer though, just seems like a mish-mash of a beer.

Bottle: Copper color with just a hint of red. Taller, billowy cream colored head. Burnt coffee along with some hints of canned chile peppers(DMS). The DMS subsides, but you are still left with a pile of spent coffee grounds. LIght malt start. A pale lager or ale backdrop. An odd green pepper flavor mixed with instant coffee. I had this on tap at the Wisconsin State Fair and thought it better than this. Finish and linger are quite dry in feel, but there are some sweet coffee hints and a herbal hops bite. Not my cup of joe. I have tastes of Cave Creek and coffee that I must now get rid of.

How about thus, a really highly rated lager.....and its a nicaraguan all female growers co-op. Without tasting this yet I am turned off by how highly this is rated. Coffee aroma. First off this has coffee in it and what real dark american lager has coffee in it? Some sizzly CO2. Quite strong commencement on the taste buds, first I thought it was a mild coffe impy stout. It is not black tho, just tastes like it. The color is rather not dark american lager. Its more like barley wine. Strong and rude like an uncivilized ale, never would know this is american dark lager, heheh. Finish of long black coffee and bitter ale. Seems stronger than 5.3%. Somebody should get this out of the dark american lager style. Rather rude end of session. Yep, this is rated high because of the imp stout lovers on this site, heheh. One of the worse dark american lagers I’ve ever tasted.

Bottle thanks to lb4lb!
Transparent ruby, near-red body with no head to speak of. Nostalgic nose of the baseball park, specifically the 8th inning when the peanut shells and swill cover the ground (a lot of swill if you root for the Pirates). This is more specifically a smoky/spicy pepper and hints of coffee from which the pepper probably emerged after some unhealthy aging. More pepper and lots of coffee in the flavor, some malt and slight bitterness. Yikes this is a tough one to handle. Moderate, juicy body, short finish with that pepper lingering in your throat. Wish I had another bottle to check against this, but I’m not going out of my way to do so.

Bottle and served in pint glass: Deep amber hue with an okay head and spotty lace. The aroma reminds me of grassy wet hops and instant coffee with a hint of pepper and urine cakes. The taste is not much better, the coffee does not taste real and the hops are nothing but a big mess. Whatever malts are in this I could not tell. A COMPLETE AND UTTER DRAINPOUR... and I like coffee so that is not the issue or perhaps it is because I can not stand crappy coffee and that is what this reminds me of. (Un-brewed coffee is sweet, WTF?)
