COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our coffee beer is more "iced coffee" than "double-mocha-mud", more "summer quencher" than "winter warmer". I start with a brown Mexican lager to compliment the coffee of choice, "Nicaragua" (beans from the La Fem Grower’s Co-operative, roasted by Just Coffee of Madison.) I include flaked maize both for added creaminess and to appease the sun gods. Extra-warm fermentation lets the yeast create more interesting flavors (the California-common effect, or "Vapor Beer", if you speak Beer-Spanglish.) Hop bitterness is increased to offset the sweet flavor of un-brewed coffee. Whole beans are soaked in the beer during cold maturation - the alcohol extracts and retains aromatics that would otherwise be lost to hot water. You want numbers? Well, numbers you shall have: 15 degrees Plato; 37 IBU’s; 5.3% ABV.

Pours deep red with nice white head, aroma has big notes of fresh coffee bean, touch of caramel and chocolate, with some bready sweetness. Like a big glass of iced coffee. Taste is huge iced coffee up front, notes of caramel and biscuit in the middle, bitter roast finish with more coffee flavor. If you like coffee forward brews, this is one to try. Awesome.

The coffee beans used in this beer were farmed by an all Female Co-Op in Nicaragua, all Free-Trade too. I guess those are all good things, but you never know the fine details, or the real story. Great beer though, hard to tell if it tastes more like coffee or beer. Literally two rights making a great big right.

Bottle. Pour is ice tea in color with a soapy off white head. Aroma is tea, honey and coffee. Taste is fizzy coffee and roasted malt. Palate is fizzy carbonation chaulky and dry. Tasty beer that drinks easy.

Nicely balanced coffee beer. It totally tastes like Fair Trade. Cool nutty flavor with a coffee aftertaste.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2012 Very much like a coffee stout but without the thickness and creaminess. Refreshing light coffee flavor draws you in, tasting very much of coffee infused/blended ales, not two separate favors . Golden red color with short head. Palate wasn’t perfect as a bit watery around the front end, but finished with a solid coffee. A new personal favorite.

Thanks to J and R for this one. Quite tasty beer. A very ale tasting lager. Coffee and roasted flavors but not over heavy. Very nice. Serving: Bottle

The idea of a coffee lager sure seems strange, but I knew I had to try this - it’s a bit odd to get used to at first, since I’m so used to coffee being in the more "obvious" beers, like porters and stouts - however, the lighter character of the beer actually lets the coffee flavors shine even more than they would in those kinds of beers - you can taste the whole bean, and all the intense characteristics you’d associate with a quality, microroast coffee - despite this, the bitterness is minimal, and only manifests in the finish, along with a leafy quality - this is quite nice.

Strong sweet tea appearance with light foam. Coffee is prominent in the aroma, with an earthy mushroom like background. Lively carbonation, with coffee once again being prominent in the flavor, with some vanilla as well.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2009 Aromas of iced espresso, nutty malts, slightly floral. Deep red-brown. Cream-colored head, moderately thick, lasts a bit, then dissipates all at once to leave a nice lacing. The first sip carries on the iced coffee comparison well, then surprises with a burst of bright citrus, like clementine oranges. The malt backbone is nutty with just a little chocolate. Without being at all thick in the palate, there’s a chocolate-milk smoothness underlying at all, that somehow doesn’t jar with a peppery prickliness in the finish. Highly drinkable.

Delicious coffee beer. Tastes like that slightly stale coffee ice cream flavor, but not too stale - actually very awesome. The beer flavor and body is light and doesn’t get in the way of the coffee but backs it up mucho nice Great stuff!
