Our coffee beer is more "iced coffee" than "double-mocha-mud", more "summer quencher" than "winter warmer". I start with a brown Mexican lager to compliment the coffee of choice, "Nicaragua" (beans from the La Fem Grower’s Co-operative, roasted by Just Coffee of Madison.) I include flaked maize both for added creaminess and to appease the sun gods. Extra-warm fermentation lets the yeast create more interesting flavors (the California-common effect, or "Vapor Beer", if you speak Beer-Spanglish.) Hop bitterness is increased to offset the sweet flavor of un-brewed coffee. Whole beans are soaked in the beer during cold maturation - the alcohol extracts and retains aromatics that would otherwise be lost to hot water. You want numbers? Well, numbers you shall have: 15 degrees Plato; 37 IBU’s; 5.3% ABV.

12 ounce bottle from some liquor store in southern Wisconsin, summer 2008, served initially quite cold. Hazy dark copper, nearly opaque, with a thick lasting tan head that laces just a bit as it fades....loads of rough dark coffee in the aroma, a bit of caramelized malts, some burnt black chocolate, a hint of thyme and other indefinable aromatic spices, quite lovely....great nutty, roasty coffee flavor that somehow integrates well with the light grainy dry lager characteristics, a touch of dry twiggy hops, quite intense and rich for this style, enough so that this feels more like a sippin’ beer than a quaffing one despite its lightness and relatively low ABV....moderate carbonation, strong lasting finishing bitterness. A beauty.

Maybe the best lager I can remember. Pours amber with a creamy head. The aroma has coffee and malt. The flavor has the coffee and malt with enough hops to balance the sweetness. Very creamy on the tongue. Finishes both bitter and sweet, creamy and smooth. Outstanding.

Bottle from Pinocchios. Pours a deep amber with a small off white head. Deep rich coffee nose with bits of bread and chocolate. Med body with coffee across the tongue... With layers of vanilla, chocolate, biscuit and caramel. Deep roasted coffee finish with layers of nuts and light chocolate.

Pours a darker reddish amber with a thinner white head. The aroma gives a musty impression, which isn’t bad at all. It contains plenty of earthy malts and coffee, some smokiness, and hints of caramel. The taste is remains potent in coffee, which is balanced well with a lesser amount of caramel. Mild chocolate as well, while still containing a good amount of earthiness. The aftertaste is coffee and is subtle yet long lasting. This one is medium bodied, with a bit of a thinner, watery texture, with average carbonation. Its pretty good overall, but a little more straightforward and not terribly exciting.

2014 bottle. Pours a bright amber/brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma is a light malt with some vegetal/green pepper. Taste is toasty malt with the vegetal coffee that gives a light bitterness. A little residual sweetness. A medium, crisp, carbonated mouthfeel. Satisfies a summertime craving for a stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a beautifully clear garnet tinged mahogany with a small ecru head that settles to a thin film and ring, with little lacing. Aroma of spent coffee beans with a pleasant nuttiness, light roast and dark caramel. Taste has a nice smooth coffee flavor with an underlying nuttiness. Slight roastiness and a molasses sweetness with a hint of burnt character. Finishes semi dry with a little roasty bitterness. Mouthfeel and body ate light with a medium carbonation. I found this to be a very delicious alternative to other coffee beers you find. It’s meant to be a warm weather beer and I think they did a wonderful and interesting job going the California Common route. Flavors are complimentary and very well balanced. Wish we could get it in Missouri.

Smooth cocoa and coffee flavors with light malt. Very nice, long finish. Not too creamy, not too sweet. Full flavor, but extremely drinkable.

$2 single from Lemon Tree. Smell has some roast malt and a touch of coffee, but also something metallic, like a rinsed glass (no, this glass was cleaned some time ago. A darker Vienna lager color, always a surprise to find a coffee or chocolate beer that isn’t pitch black. Taste comes in equal parts light roast coffee, and a fizzy beer. Certainly a unique combination, and I give it props for that. This could be the basis of a fine coffee soda, with malt instead of sugar, yes?

12 oz bottle over a Greek lunch at Baruni’s in Baden, PA. Everything is nice here, perfect balance or ingredients, freshness, etc. Has and uncanny bitterness that must be from the coffee. Adding corn for creaminess is a novel idea that works well.
