Sweet and a little tart, with a peppery character and a hint of...cherry sweetness? Weird fucking beer. Really interesting though. Picked up in Madison along with many more normal beers.

Pours a murky bright red. Aroma full of pepper. Flavor has some funky sour notes, and definite pepper presence. Strangely pretty good.

2.1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Brought to our epic tasting...Pours a light carbonated red that is pretty foamy with lots of retention...The aroma and taste on this are all one thing BLACK PEPPER and the strong pepper you have ever smelled at that. You cannot sniff this for more than a second or take a big sip without almost gagging. There were 10 of us and we coudln’t drink more than half the bottle.
Pepper bomb that needs to have production stopped.

12 oz. bottle from Steve’s Madison
Ar: Fresh cracked pepper, allspice. Heck, this doesn’t smell too much different from the corned beef and cabbage I made today. Odd, but a surprisingly nice dinner pairing.
Ap: Served in trappist glass at 55’F. Lovely hazy red-amber pour with a 1" off-white head. Decent head retention.
T: Dominated by sweetness (probably from the beets) and a huge black pepper flavor. Spicy peppery finish leaves a bit of a tingle in the mouth.
P: Medium-thick, sticky body with very active carbonation.
O: Fun beer! I’m not a huge fan of black pepper in beers, but I still enjoyed this.

Had it on tap, first sip was great, tart, with ample spiciness and sweet beet. As it went along though it got a bit vegetal and tiresome, decent beer, worth a try.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Town Hall. Poured a clear reddish amber with a near white head that dissipated slowly to the edges and laced nicely. Aroma was full of beet and grain with a slight tartness and a bit of pepper in the finish to add spice. Flavor began with a light beet note and a slight tartness with a hint of pepper. Definitely a unique beer.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
The aroma is lightly sweet like a traditional golden ale. It is honey amber in color with a decent-sized head on top. The flavors start out nicely with beets on the ale and then pepper comes to tingle the palate. The problem is that it doesn’t end well, it is too dry on the finish as opposed to a nice lingering tart or funk that you would get on those yeast strains used. The pepper comes to linger a bit later at the end of the tongue though if you like that kind of thing.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 ounce bottle opened 9/27/10. Sadly, I don’t remember who sent this my way. Pours a hazy vibrant strawberry color with a thick, creamy tan head. Medium sized with good retention and lacing. Aroma of tart berries, earthy notes and a spicy finish. The taste is very peppery, almost akin to chili peppers, but with no heat. Some other subtle vegetal notes before a tart, fruity finish. Medium bodied.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tasted from a bottle purchased at Discount Liquor. Pours cloudy orange with an average and very smooth white head that leaves smooth lace. The nose is strong black pepper with beet earthiness and a hint of fresh grapefruit juice. This is very unique. The pepper flavor is a little more subdued on the palate with the grapefruit and malts taking the initial flavors with the black pepper and earthy beets coming through on the back of the palate. The body is medium with lively carbonation and a long peppery and earthy finish.
