Bottle. Looks like a slightly hazy lager topped with an attractive white head. Aroma packs a flowery, hoppy punch with hints of citrus. The flower/hop notes are, if anything, even more intense in the flavour. Finish is very dry with hints of a wheat beer tang. Similar to the Phoenix Pilsner at Manchester’s Sand Bar. I would love to find this excellent beer on cask.

Cask handpull at Three Judges, Glasgow. Beer of the day for me. Gold, thin white head. Lovely citrusy bitter. Superb. Great beer in the Dark Star Hophead, Oakham JHB line. Excellent. So good I had another pint of it.

Cask conditioned at The Three Judges, Glasgow. Golden colour, minimal head. Lovely citrussy aroma, also with notes of flowers and tropical fruits. The hoppy flavour has also citrus and tropical fruits, much like Crouch Vale Brewers Gold Extra, but with a more distinct bitterness in the finish. Another great beer!

[cask at Thomson’s, Edinburgh] Fyne Ales are one of Scotland’s most under-rated breweries, and Avalanche is their outstanding beer. When kept and served well on cask it’s the quintessential session beer – golden and clear with a decent head retention. Fantastic aromas of soft, grassy hops with a backbone of fruit. On the palate the flavours are subtly bitter hops with a wonderful citrus flavour, leading to a moreish bitter aftertaste from the malt. One of the very best Scottish beers, and any pub I walk into with this on, I know what I’m having before I reach the bar [03032009]

Cask at the Euston Tap. Pours clear, rich gold with a sturdy, white head. Has a very fresh hop aroma, straw, citrus light pine. Light to medium sweet flavor, well balanced, some straw and hay, zesty citrus, mild earthy bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Crisp finish, dry straw, faint toast and earth, subtle grass and citrus. This was a pretty fantastic beer.

In short: A clean and crisp blonde ale with a fresh floral character. Superb thirst beer
How: From a bottle at Mondial de la Bière 2011
The look: Clear blonde body topped by a small white head
In long: The moderately hoppy nose evokes freshness with its floral hops, a walk in the garden. Body is crisp pale malts, crisp half-dry hay sensation. The hopping evokes dried flower petals and light citrusy notes. Bitterness level is in the mild-medium range and the finish is moderately dry. Pleasant clean and crisp mouthfeel. Certainly not the most eccentric beer out there but it just “tastes right” and the flavors scream freshness. This is a beer I would make an everyday beer, one of the best straightforward thirst Golden Ale/Blond Ale that I have ever had. Of course this is a beer that needs to be super-fresh to be really enjoyable, we probably were lucking with the timing when got the bottles for the Montreal Mondial. I’ve enjoyed some cask conditionned session British beers in England but before tasting the Fyne Ales bottles I thought that England micros were not able to do interesting thirst beer in bottles. But now I stand corrected. I can also sit corrected. And lay down corrected. There is not a position I cannot take without being corrected. I’m wrong all the time.
