In order to get the right balance of smokiness with a hint of chilli heat, quite a few experiments were conducted with chillies jammed in bottles of dark beer, and brews of chilli tea. Some of the early experiments were a bit on the spicy side; just ask our drayman Archie who got tricked into trying a bottle of Vital Spark that had been infused with a Habanero for over a week!
Vic, Andy and Marissa from Brewdog Glasgow came up to the brewery to brew their beer on what turned out to be a monster 11 hour brew day. The guys from Brewdog Glasgow quickly learned the basics of brewing; don’t get stuck in the Mash Tun, and point the ends of hoses away from your face before turning on. They were put to work cleaning out the copper, loading the grist and digging out the mash tun, and of course a few beers were enjoyed throughout the day.
The beer was named 48 Miles Later, relating to the distance between the bar and the brewery, and will be launched, alongside the 11 other beers in the festival, in all Brewdog bars on Saturday the 19th with the Fyne Ales team doing a meet the brewer at Brewdog Glasgow from 5pm.

Keg at BD Shoreditch on Collab Fest. It pours deep brown almost black with smallest eggshell head. Aroma is sweet, sugary with light peppers. Taste is burnt coffee, light green peppers, candy sugar. Not bad but not my favourite.

Keg at BrewDog Glasgow. Black body with a faint off-white cap that quickly fades. Light lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, smoke, pine and coffee. Just a hint of citrus. Flavour is similar to the aroma but with a light chilli heat in the finish. Medium body with an oily texture. Average carbonation. I don’t like it when beer brewed with chilli is overly spicy - the spice in this, though, is just about right.

On tap @ In De Wildeman, sold as 48 Miles Later and as a BIPA. Black color. Off white head - not much. Aroma’s: a little fruit, some roast. Retronasal more is coming out: roast, ground coffee, some red fruit. Flavor is roasted malts, light acidity, light bitterness. Body is light to medium. Finish of heavy roast, bitter. Didn’t get any chili...

Keg @ BrewDog Glasgow as 48 miles later. Almost black, reasonable head. Treacle coffee aroma. Chilli coffee flavour. Hot chilli finish. Dry and harsh but it is growing on me.

Borefts 2013. Poured black with a small tan head. Aroma of subdued dark fruit, milk chocolate. Light body, flavour is very watery, not very interesting.

Draft at BrewDog Camden on 19 October. Poured a opaque black with a thin black head. Aroma of smoked malt, coffee and dried fruit. Citrus hop flavour with peat and cured meat. Finishes with burnt malts, caramel and smoked wood chips and a little spicy edge. Black IPA, smoked chilli; there is no part of this I don’t like and this worked very well. Joint favourite of the collaboration festival with the Cromarty Black Rocker.

[keg, BrewDog Edinburgh] Slightly hazy blackish/brown pour with an off-white head. The aroma is a lot of things, slightly – some chilli, a touch of smoke, a bit of citrus, an edge of pine. Flavours are very similar – loads of elements all sitting quietly together. Nothing clashing, but nothing standing out. Interesting [19102013]

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 28.09.2013, tap @ Borefts:
Tiny bubbly mediumlasting head. Aroma is chili, licorice, puffed rice, rubber, hops, coffee, roasted grain, hay, grass. Taste is slightly dry and roasted, dark malts, burnt caramel, rubber, burnt coffee, hay, licorice, hints of cardboard and chili. Longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Boring.

Keg at Brewdog shoreditch. Aroma is Roasty berry and hint of smoke. Opaque black with a thin light tan head that fades. Flavour is slight medicinal phenol, wood and smoke. In the finish there is classic american c-hop. I like this. It is an interesting take on the black IPA.

Keg @ BrewDog Camden. Hard to tell in here but looks pretty black to me. Sweet aroma. Dark chili chocolate. Floral notes. Tastes sweet with very bitter aftertaste. Wanted more from the chilli, almost too balanced. Overall Ok. Good actually but maybe I expected more.
