3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Wine & Cheese. Pours very dark cola with a tan head. Aroma is hints of milky chocolate, maybe a touch of vanilla, coffee?, but not particularly any burnt malt. Med body. Flavor is a touch of burnt malt, some milky chocolate (darkish, perhaps) and a fair amount of mixed resin/citrus/fruit hop. It’s not exactly dry, and it’s fairly bitter. Good black IPA.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
330 ml bottle drank at Les Vignerons. Dark brown, not entirely impossible to see through, with a nice, creamy, forever lasting beige head. Pleasent and very clean nose despite no actual trace of hops: milk chocolate, vanilla beans, slightly toasted malts and tons of nuts (especially almonds and hazelnuts). Taste follow suite, again with no hops taste nor presence (i.e. bitterness) but what’s in the glass is tasty and well crafted. Smooth mouthfeel with a mild chocolate sweetness and a hint of green coffee beans taste. Average carbonation, medium body, slightly oily texture. If somebody told me this was a milk stout, I would have believed him.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From a bottle in Edinburgh.
Clear and dark brown, looking nearly opaque in the glass.
An IPA-level hop load fights with a strong load of very dark malts for dominance. .. the flavor doesn’t win. Flavor improve a bit with warming.
Good balance in the aroma.

18.11.2013. Tumman ruskea, ilman vaahtoa. Maku ensin ipamainen, nopeasti muuttuu stoutimaiseksi, jälkimaksu suklainen ja kuiva.

Bottle from the Hive. Dark dark ruby brown, big tan collapsing head. Malts and light hops, faint pine. Sweet orange and slightly lactic with chocolate undertones. Soft carbonation, long bitter sweet finish. A very soft and approachable BIPA, but I prefer more heft.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled from a bottle purchased in Edinburgh (thanks Rory and Rachel!). Pours black with a good tan head. Malt and citrus aromas. The taste has plenty of roasted malts, with the associated coffee and chocolate flavours, but mixed in with grassy and bitter hops. There is a distinct, astringent gooseberry/grapefruit flavour along with the charred malt taste. It is a bit like the flavour of a slightly caramelised baked grapefruit, if you can imagine such a thing. An interesting and original beer, but I find the roasted flavours do not combine particularly well with the more citrusy notes.
