Bottle; black, with the merest hint of ruby brown at the edges, next to no head; roast malt aroma; gentle roast malt and ripe berry fruit flavour; light sweetness; dry, bitter finish with some nice smoky chocolate; smooth and beautifully balanced; I’ve had a few stouts recently from some much vaunted breweries, but this is one of the best.

330ml bottle. Glossy pitch with a slender beige collar. Slightly saline, burnt berries, toast, coal smoke, fennel seed and Black Jacks aroma. Slick, bittersweet but mostly bitter, black choc on burnt toast flavour with brackish hints. Puff of soot. Good.

Cask handpump at White Horse Winter Best of British Beer Festival, Chelmsford. Black with soft head - great looking pint. Little by way of aroma, mild chocolate, but more chocolate came through on drinking. Full bodied.

On the tap. Velvety taste, soft and perfumed foam, not perceived as much alcoholic despite the %

On cask in the Wildeman. Poured deep black with very little head. Aroma of very dark chocolate and some roast malt. Quite weak bodied, but the flavour of chocolate, coffee and roast malt with a hint of liquorice more than compensate.

Cask at In de Wildeman. Black colour, no head. Aroma of hard roasted malts, cold coffee, toffee. Flavour is medium sweet, toffee, hard roasted malts, coffee, liqourice, bitter roasted malty finish. Medium-bodied, soft mouthfeel. Very tasty stout.

Cask @ In De Wildeman. Deep dark color, but not quite opaque. No head to speak of. Aroma’s: roasted/gebrand, sweet drop/licorice, cocoa. Flavor is medium sweet, roasted. Body is medium. Still quite some carbonation. Finishes fairly dry, roasted (some ash) and medium bitter. Really nice.

Bottle at home in London. Pours clear, red-brown with a small, beige foam head. Dry, ashy roast nose. Light to medium sweet flavor, more ash, light roast, light baking cocoa, mellow earthy bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Semi-dry finish with plenty of baking cocoa, restrained roasted malts, some dried cherries, light bitterness. Very pleasant stout, though certainly not a super complex beer.

Tasted on tap @Grove Inn, Huddersfield, on 03/11/2012. Pours sticky black with a lovely 1/2 inch beige head. Aroma is faint, roasted malts. Mouthfeel is a bit silky smooth, medium-to-low carbonation level. Taste is just normal, no surprises, medium acidic, again roasted tones and a hint of vanilla in the back. An ok beer, definitely could be better for its 6,2% alc. Neutral. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
