4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
A lively dark brown beer with thick pillowy cream head and a tantalising aroma of coffee grounds, forest floors, aniseed and burnt caramel. The latter comes to the fore in the body of the beer, which is thick and creamy. A brief bitter spike follows and the beer mellows into coffee and chocolate leaving a lasting chocolate and malty note. Just how I like my porters. The bottle conditioning keeps it in fine fettle. I’d happily sup this beer in bottle form again and hope I am fortunate enough to come across a cask version.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from a Kentish friend. It pours dark ruby with low carbonation and a large foamy beige head. The nose is cocoa, liquorice, coffee, farmyard and cheese. The taste is liquorice, milk chocolate, caramel, burnt sugar, smokey, rich-roast coffee, charcoal and vanilla with a dry, burnt-bitter finish. A decent, drinkable porter.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask at the Evening Star, Brighton. Pours a deep red with a light, beige head. Has some ripe fruits on the nose with a bit of caramel. Flavor is lightly sweet with dark and dank ripe fruits, some mild, toasty malts, and herbal bitters. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish with very herbal, tea-bag hops, and some mild caramel and fruits, but not too sweet. Pretty alright.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black, thin ring of beige foam. Smells like cherry and oak, mixed a bit of coffee. Flavor is pretty much the same, but less so. I get some coffee, cherry and oak (again), but it’s a bit on the bland side. Thanks to grownfool for bringing this one!
