COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

12 oz. bottle: Sparkling clear pour with lots of spritzy carbonation and a receding ivory head. Light aroma is peach esthers and some straw. Body follows suit, with a broaded spectrum of esthery notes - peach and baked apple. Herbal hops and subtle caramel malts add some depth. This is a great example of a very delicate style.

Sorry for the german rating, but this is a lousy rating from my "newbie" time (2007-2009), and it’s not worth of being translated. I just added it for the statistics, and to complete my backlog!

Pale yellow color with small white head. Hoppy aroma. Very sweet and malty flavor.

Chear yellow pour, 2 fingers of head. Subtle Grassy/herbal aroma, some green apple and green grape. Easy drinking - Green fruit, straw, grassy, some sweetness, white bread - fairly crisp. Light bodied, medium carbonation. Good representation of an under-appreciated style.

Tap at Gaffel pub next to Cologne main railway station. Another Kolsch! That’s about as much as I can be arsed to write about this or most from this style.

Pours light pale as any pils. Head is dense and frothy white. Aromas grains malt, some herbs. The body is medium thick carbonation also medium mouthful and smooth with mild watery finish. Palate has sweet maltiness balanced out with some hoppiness with nice subtle herbal fruit taste. After taste mild, finish quite short hoppiness. A mild beer, but better than the two other Kölsch I had from the area.

BlackIPA (197) - Rochester, New York, USA - JAN 16, 2012
Pours a clear golden hue with a one finger head consisting of fine bubbles. I’m getting wheat, hay, banana and clove in the aroma. Taste follows the lead of the aroma, but with less intensity. Thin mouthfeel, light hop presence. This is a very average beer, but I could see drinking it in the warmer summer months.

A very good relaxing beer! Hints of nutty and sweet with the right amount of bitter. One of my favorite beers to kick back and relax with, just enough carbonation involved. A little harder to find in my region, but well worth finding a supplier... Wish more were out there!

Bottle. Golden with medumcarbonation. Sweet with a gentle maltiness and a dry finnish. An excellent example of this lovely style.
