COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Draft at Birch & Barley. Poured a clear golden color. The head was a few fingers high and white with good retention and lacing. Smelled of grassy hop, subdued grape candy and pale malt. Light bodied and delicately sweet with the flavors mirroring the aromas closely. Delicious.

500 mL bottle. Pale gold with very little head. Smells like pineapple wine. Taste is grainy, malty/grassy. Just a hint of hops hops - a little sweet at the end, actually. Dry and quite highly carbonated. I’d like to see a little more fruitiness, but it’s a decent summer beer.

500mL from the Lykkbo. Pretty happy to see this one. How’d a REAL Kolsch get past the Ontario Alcohol and Fun Times Gestapo? Pours a bright pale gold with a small white head. Aroma is really pleasant, great biscuity pale malts, but the lemony, zesty hops are the main attraction. Flavour rides along on a velvet smooth palate with some dry hop bite in the finish to balance it out. Same great pale malts and subtle but tasty hops. Mild honey-sickle sweetness with vague hints of fruitiness. Reminds me of a really good Pils on tap, with toned down hopping. This is a very simple and elegant beer, with some nice subtle aspects that I was expecting. I’m glad I could try a legitimate example of such a rare and delicate style (no offense Beau’s), and it’s definitely worth buying more.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City, CA. Pours crystal clear golden with a nice white head. Aroma is malty and grainy with slight hop notes. Flavor is very grainy with pale malt and some earthy and grassy hops. Good for the style. Very clean and crisp on the palate with medium-light body. Overall this is a solid and drinkable Kolsch. Not my favorite style, but I enjoyed it.

500ml bottle, fairly fresh sample. Pours a clear light gold ale in the glass with 2 finger white tight pored cap...lasts and laces the glass well. Sharp carbonation Apple, some pear, tosty grains, leafy herb and woody aromas some musty-honey sweetness. Front is grainy, balanced well with woody nobel hopping, some demure sweetness. Very crisp light dry character, dry tart mouth feel, Finish goes dry light herbal-citus snap in the finish. A great Kolsch, pretty much defines the style....crisp, delicate character subtle complexity, deeply quenching.
