COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Pours amber with a medium sized white long lasting head. Aroma of cereals and herbal hops. Malty flavor with a rather dominating harsh bitterness with a slightly spicy off-flavor. Interesting beer but a bit too chaotic and unbalanced flavor and mouthfeel.

I have never seen this beer, but now that I live in New York, it is in virtually every bar. Got this beer as a free sample in a Gowanus Yacht Club. Pours a orange/yellow color without much in the way of head. Not very complex aroma or taste, but smooth and slightly sweet. Very easy to drink ten of these if you cared to.

Had this beer on tap at the Big Hunt. I thought it was very good for a german kolsch, sweet and smooth with a silky mouthfeel. Very pleasant.

Even though it was not overly flavorful I did not think it was too unpleasant, hints of cornbread though which makes me wonder if even though in Germany thew must abide by the purity law, selling overseas does not require this happens. God head retention and it was quite refreshing to say the least. mostly a malty sweetness is present with very subtle hops presence. lots of carbonation.

Bottle from Oddbins. Pale yellow colour, bubbly white head. Cheap, skunky, grassy malts. Not good.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2009 I’m not a fan of this at all. Smell is of rotting apples, sweat, and hops. Taste was an unpleasant bitterness with an overly sweet mouthfeel. It actually made my stomach turn. Could possibly be a bad bottle but I doubt it./ I just redrank this beer in KOLN and it was awful. see above.

Bouteille 500ml.

Bottle- Poured a clear pale gold with thick foam head. Mild aged yeast-hop quality with smooth malts and crisp mouth feel. Grains blend well with a slight citrus spice, nice drinker.
