The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

On tap somewhere in Berlin (old rating). Clear, pale golden body with a small white head. Light fruity aroma, feels clean, not much more in the nose. Flavor is light, soft pale malt with a touch of fruit and moderate bitterness. Medium to thin body and weak aftertaste. Not bad, but honestly I don’t find that much difference between this Kölsch and a pale lager.

Yellow clear color white foam head and very little smell. The taste is fresh with an unmotivated but okay performing carbonation. However this beer has a tart bitterness, that is nicely dosed and separates it from other kölsch.

On tap. Off white good head, reduces to a layer, on a warm golden beer with strawy tones. Long carpets as lacing. Aroma; caramel malts, herbs, spices, floral hops. Taste; grassy hops, caramel, malts, herbs, spices, fruit peel, note of herbal butterscotch. Body; normal, easy going with soft carbonation, fruity body. Taste moves towards mild finish in fruit peels, clean and with hops.

Bottle. Medium golden color with a medium head. Aroma was bread, slight whiffs of sweetness and nuts. Taste was actually not bad. Grains, slightly bitter, a note of tree fruit in the finish.

Pale yellow, thin white head that disappears quickly. Nose is fruity and malty. Very bubbly. Light bodied. The aroma is a delicate mix of fruit, malt, and hops. Taste is light, somewhat bitter and a touch of salt. Crisp and inoffensive.

On tap, at the Deutsche Telekom HQ in Bonn. Looks err like a Kölsch, golden, thin white foam. I’d say this one is slightly more on the clean and bitter end of the spectrum, Kölsch naysayers might say pils-like! Actually more bitter if drunk quickly. Gets a bit flabby and leaves an unpleasant finish if it warms up too much. Ok, but at the margin not my favourite Kölsch.

Aroma is hay and malty. Taste is a very mild bitterness. Body is rather full again. Maybe this just isn’t my style? Anyway, I didn’t enjoy it very much, alththough it is very drinkable.
