Commercial Description:
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel's flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Draught at the Gaffel Haus in Koln. Had this along with a 250g vealwurst with potatoes and creamed cabbage. The cabbage was divine but the wurst was not so good. More of a touristy place to eat. The kolsch had a finely foamed white head. Has a crisp and slightly peppery, lightly sharp texture and flavor. More crisp than other Kolsch. Yeasty, raw flavors abound. Slightly grainy, with some celery and vegetable flavors in the finish. Still not exceptional.

Bottled. Beer is a clear light gold with a small, white, frothy, mostly and quickly diminishing head. The aroma is lightly malty with a note of toasted grain; light miscellaneous note of pineapple and green apple. The flavor is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, lightly acidic with a long, lightly bitter, dirty metallic (read, sucking on a quarter) finish. The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is fizzy.

Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), hint of honey. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Fairly bland but nothing wrong with it.

Fabulous sunny yellow (I guess I’ve been drinking too many dark brews lately to find a Beer like this gorgeous), the head was thick, clingy and pearly white. <!-- br -->Lots of grain aromas, with a little lavender, but maybe a touch sulfuric as well. Maybe I should have left it to "breathe" a little. <!-- br -->The light carbonation makes it almost creamy on my palate. For the style, the body has quite a bit of legs to it, but with a dry, refreshing finish. Never had a real gravity-poured Kolsch in Koln, I bet it’s better than this, but this Beer wasn’t bad at all, especially on the patio on a warm Sunday afternoon.

Clear, attractive golden with a big, frothy white head. Aroma is floral with a little graininess. Flavor has notes of sweet pale malt, grain, a little caramel, zesty lemon-y noble hops and a little grass. Slight metallic edge at the end. Medium bodied with a smooth yet creamy texture - perfect carbonation level. Very crisp, refreshing and drinkable. Some lacing left on the glass, good head retention. A good summer beer.

12 oz bottle. Very pale goden beer with a thick fine-laced white head. Arom aof pale malt, light bread and nice noble, lightly spicy/lightly grassy hops. Flavour starts out good, clean bready malts, moderate bitterness, some hop flavour and a fairly dry finish. Alas, there is a very distracting metallic note that ruins the overall balance.

Little aroma and the pour is a light golden. The flavor is mild with some slight carbonation to coat the tongue. Best as summer drink when one does not want something heavy.
