The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Pours a clean golden color, topped with a decent white head. There is a fairly strong malty aroma, slightly dusty. The taste is between the sweetness of malty and hoppy bitterness. Drinkable and enjoyable, although slight metal feel in the end.

500 mL bottle. Pours crystalline, light straw with a cap of white head. Doughy pilsner malt, light biscuit, sweet grass and subtle pear fruit. Gentle malt sweetness with a crisp, lightly hopped finish. Surprisingly clean and delightfully refreshing, light bodied with full carbonation. It might be a macro in Germany but it beats the hell out of our domestic lager-trash.

Pours golden. Aroma of some malt. Tastes of about half mild malts at half mild hops. Not really sure lot going on here. Refreshing, though.

The body has a bright light yellow color with great clarity. The pour produced a tall soapy white head. This fluffy light head fades quickly leaving just a thin ring of bubbles to hug the edge of the glass. Lacing is minimal and spotty. The aroma is light overall and there is delicate bready malt with a decent amount of floral and botanical hop notes. It also has a hint of sulfur to it as well. Its light body has a delicate bready maltiness with a slight fruity quality to it. The hops are in prefect light balance. They add a similar floral/botanical spice and bitterness as detected in the aroma. It finishes clean and crisp. Its delicate flavor and light texture and body make it an easy hot weather drinker.

Bleh. Kinda bready, but kinda metallic too. Not digging the metal-y wang at the end. Won't get again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pale yellow pour with water white head. Aroma is light sweet corn, pilsner malt and a light papery aroma. Flavor is corn, a bit of harsh gasoline flavor. Sweetness at teh start fades to .a rather harsh bitter finish. A touch thin and watery, medium high carbonation. A bit of harshness prevails over the sweet start. Light bodied with a bitter that doesn’t seem to come from hops. not so much

Bottle from Yamaichi. Light grainy malt nose with some weedy hops and a bit of cardboard. Clear medium straw color, fat slow bubbles rising. Grassy initial, some mineral notes right away as well, corm, and light bitterness. Thin-medium body and a bit fry in finish. Okay, Drinkable, pretty ordinary stuff.
