The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Pale yellow, thin white head that disappears quickly. Nose is fruity and malty. Very bubbly. Light bodied. The aroma is a delicate mix of fruit, malt, and hops. Taste is light, somewhat bitter and a touch of salt. Crisp and inoffensive.

On tap, at the Deutsche Telekom HQ in Bonn. Looks err like a Kölsch, golden, thin white foam. I’d say this one is slightly more on the clean and bitter end of the spectrum, Kölsch naysayers might say pils-like! Actually more bitter if drunk quickly. Gets a bit flabby and leaves an unpleasant finish if it warms up too much. Ok, but at the margin not my favourite Kölsch.

Aroma is hay and malty. Taste is a very mild bitterness. Body is rather full again. Maybe this just isn’t my style? Anyway, I didn’t enjoy it very much, alththough it is very drinkable.

Pours with a wispy, white head that doesn’t stick around for long. There’s a clear gold colour with a faintly fruity colour and a pleasant finish. There’s a reason why this is the best known kolsch. It’s a fine example of the style and a decent way to start off the Super Bowl, although it’s more of a summer beer.

500 ml bottle. Pours a clear light golden colour with almost no head left. Nose of sour malts. Taste is malty with a silk smooth and sour finish. Medium body and carbonation. A good classic kölsch. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
