The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Pours bright gold with dancing carbonation and a soapy white head. The aroma has clean pale malt, grass, hops, light pepper and slick lightly toasted malt. Medium / light crisp body that has some smoothness and ends with a light sheeting of subdued fizzy carbonation. The flavor starts with clean and smooth malt from the aroma that’s perfectly balanced with the spicy hop presence. The grassiness comes out on the finisish. An excellend kolsch.

Bottled 50cl. It pours a yellow beer with a white head. The nose is bready, decent, but not very powerful. I sampled the beer at the temperature indicated on the label. (6 to 8 degrees celsius). Hints of lemon, wood and honey. The taste is wonderfully bready with hints of apricots. A good hop character. Some hay and heather. Bitter, medium bodied. A very pleasant mouthfeel. The finish is bitter with hints of herbs and lemon. A great beer.

My prejudices are clear and it’s hard for me to get excited about a Kolsch, but this one made it impossible. Crystal clear gold ... overly filtered ... with small white head. Nothing else at all striking. Thin in the mouth, thin in the nose ... just nothing to say about this.

A nice crisp beer with light hops and a nice smooth bit of malt flavor. Would go over well with the typical lager drinkersmethinks.

A light touch of pilsner malt flavour. Mouthfeel: Light, very light and fluffy, dry Overall: Hay and straw with some light floral hop aroma and pilsner malt character. Refreshing enjoyable beer. Weak aroma, but I dont buy beer to smell it. Bright golden yellow and looks great. Taste is not strong but delicious nonetheless. A great beer for the price. People who dont have the palate to appreciate bolder styles should reach for this over their regular macro lager. It would make a nice baby step toward appreciating more complex beers.
