The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Straw in color with a medium white head. Mild sulphur note in the aroma with a clean hint of malt. bitter hops in the finish, thin, unassuming.

Clear, attractive golden with a big, frothy white head. Aroma is floral with a little graininess. Flavor has notes of sweet pale malt, grain, a little caramel, zesty lemon-y noble hops and a little grass. Slight metallic edge at the end. Medium bodied with a smooth yet creamy texture - perfect carbonation level. Very crisp, refreshing and drinkable. Some lacing left on the glass, good head retention. A good summer beer.

12 oz bottle. Very pale goden beer with a thick fine-laced white head. Arom aof pale malt, light bread and nice noble, lightly spicy/lightly grassy hops. Flavour starts out good, clean bready malts, moderate bitterness, some hop flavour and a fairly dry finish. Alas, there is a very distracting metallic note that ruins the overall balance.

Little aroma and the pour is a light golden. The flavor is mild with some slight carbonation to coat the tongue. Best as summer drink when one does not want something heavy.

Aromas of nothing to speak. Pours a pale golden, very indicative of style. No head of importance. Flavor is, again, indicative of style. Very crisp and refreshing, which is the "job" of a kolsch. Good warm weather quencher. Plenty of well-utilized carbonation mixes nicely with the latent light hoppy aftereffects. Goes down well, without being too watery. And the aromas do open up a bit while the beer warms. Contributes nicely to the rest of the presentation. What it lacks for simplicity’s sake, for the style it’s definitely not complex, but I appreciate well what it’s trying to pull off.

Bottle. Poured an effervescent pale yellow with a moderate off-white head. The body was slightly malty and finished with a crisp hoppiness that was not very assertive. Not much too it at all.

On draft at Issac Newton’s. Pous a clear golden with a decent sized white head. Aroma is pretty bland, sweet malts, citrus, and slight hops. Flavor is pretty bland also, slightly sweet, citrusy, and a slight hoppy bite. A boring and a forgetable beer.

from a 5L party keg, courtsey of my friend from Koln. golden with a small even head. weak aroma of bready malt. the flavor was also bready, but not overpowering like the other kolsch I had. finished crisp with some hops. on a warm day this could be refreshing, but there is nothing too interesting about it.
