The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

On draft at Issac Newton’s. Pous a clear golden with a decent sized white head. Aroma is pretty bland, sweet malts, citrus, and slight hops. Flavor is pretty bland also, slightly sweet, citrusy, and a slight hoppy bite. A boring and a forgetable beer.

from a 5L party keg, courtsey of my friend from Koln. golden with a small even head. weak aroma of bready malt. the flavor was also bready, but not overpowering like the other kolsch I had. finished crisp with some hops. on a warm day this could be refreshing, but there is nothing too interesting about it.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2008 Very light yellow color with a smallish head. Aroma is bready in an almost sour way but not at all unpleasant. Taste is really light to an almost watery fault. Some corn flavor is evident but again, not unpleasant. Really not bad and very light makes it really easy drinking.

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2013 500ml bottle. Pale gold with disappearing white head. Nice hop, some lemon citrus. Light, enjoyable, good pale malt and lemony finish. I rather like it. 3.2/5 rerate a bit better, decent hop on finish.

It’s OK. Has a slight metallic off flavor. Pretty light in the flavor department.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2006 Bottled, in Köln. Light, clear golden pour with little head. Mild and thin, but fresh and crisp. Sweet finish and a pleasant aftertaste. Update: Had this later in Leipzig, on tap, and had much the same reaction. Bit of a bad aftertaste, but the mushrooms in my pizza may have contributed to that phenomenon. Still, very drinkable, can’t wait to try in warmer weather.

Update No. 2: Slightly more controlled conditions. Crisp, hoppy, and bitter. A bit more malt shining through, not quite bready. Aroma is nothing to write home about. This is a nice Kölsch, rounded combination of hops, healthy bitterness, and effervescence, yet I’d rather have a Pilsner. The rating holds.

Bottle (12oz). My first (and likely last) Kolsch. Poured clear bright gold with a bright white soapy head. Smells vaguely skunky, like a weak pale lager - or catnip. Taste is quite pungent, grassy, euro hops - not too bad! Moutfeel lightly fizzy, astringent, watery - patio drink?

Pale gold in color with a nice, white, sustained head. This bottle is unfortunately skunked but underneath has some honey-like German malt character, maybe a touch of wineyness from a wheat malt and well-attenuated (dry) combination, and some perfumy, spicy hops. Flavor is right. Overall palate is dry, there is some fruitiness, good, winy acidity, German malt flavor is upfront then presents itself in a post- finish resurrection.

Bottle. Somewhat sour and earthy vegetable flavor, light hops on the nose. The most distinguishing and pleasing element is its finish, which has some honey-hops to it. My girlfriend thought it tasted like coors, for the most part, given my taste, I’d agree there should be mor ehere to distinguish it from that, although it’s still a good deal better than a coors.
