COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Pours a clear bright golden with a fluffy white head that leaves some lacing in my glass, bready and fruity aromas. Apple, lemon and bready flavors. Medium bodied with a crisp and carbonated mouthfeel, finishes clean and dry, this one really hits the spot on a hot day

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2010 Clear yellow, white head, almost but not quite fizzy. Very bready aroma. Very lightly floral hop note, but an overall satisfying malt profile. Very faint bitterness on finish. Highly drinkable, although not complex. Nothing wrong with this beer. RERATE: 3/21/10, bumped it up slightly, as everything just came together here for me. Aroma was less bready, perhaps more crackery. Hops a bit more floral and more noticeable, but still in balance. Just rather lovely. Original numbers were 6,3,7,3,15.

Nice beer. I’ve only ever tasted one other Kolsch from Cologne, so I don’t have much actual experience to go on. Poured with a nice white head that mostly fades and no lace. Color is a bright yellow gold. Aroma is a slightly spicy, fruity, hoppy, and beery. Flavor’s about the same; slightly bittersweet. I do pick up a faint hint of metallic others have noted. Almost a soft body. Good clean finish. Excellent session beer.

Draft at Birch & Barley. Poured a clear golden color. The head was a few fingers high and white with good retention and lacing. Smelled of grassy hop, subdued grape candy and pale malt. Light bodied and delicately sweet with the flavors mirroring the aromas closely. Delicious.

On-tap, served in a Gaffel stange glass. Gaffel Koelsh, not Kölsch, was on the tap handle, which is how this drew my interest. Clear pale golden appearance with active, steady carbonation, tight foamy white head, decent retention, a good looking Kölsch. Mainly clean smelling nose, light sweet pale malts, touch of grain, herbal, floral hops. The proper, firm light body, crisp and dry tasting, saltine cracker-like malts, a subtle white grape fruitiness, assertive, spicy hops that have a nice sharp bite towards the end, dry and clean in the finish, leaving your mouth wanting more. Extremely smooth, easy drinkability, quite refreshing, I am going to be looking for this in bottles now.

Bottle at home from Kris Wines. Very clear and very pale blond colour with big white creamy head. Aroma is predominately grainy and malty and slightly appley. Ultra crisp taste with some light bitterness at the finish, and of course lots of wheat and grain again. Slightly floury too. I quite like Kolsch, and this is a pretty nice Kolsch as far as I am concerned. Uncomplicated, but just nice.

A: The pour is a clear golden color with a thin white head to go with it. S: Nose opens with grassy and floral hops. Just a touch of corn, but overall, a pretty crisp and clean malt aroma that’s a slightly bready, but more toward the biscuit side. T: A solid cracker malt flavor to begin and there’s a bit of bread there as well. Some nice floral hop flavor with a touch of earthiness. There’s a mild fruity sweetness too, such as apples and white grapes. A very mild bitterness to this one. M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation. D: Like a kolsch should be, really crisp and refreshing. Very easy to drink.
